England may end 2022 World Cup bid
England will withdraw their bid to host 2022 World Cup if the United States pulls out of their bid for the 2018 World Cup.
David Dein, the president of England’s bid was speaking at a media briefing in which he suggested that the US would stop in their bid to host the 2018 event. Speaking on the matter Dein said, "Consequently we will almost certainly withdraw from 2022.”
However, so far the US has denied pulling out of its bid to host the tournament. If the US does pull out of the 2018 bid the 2018 World Cup will be held by a European side.
Currently England, the US, Russia and joint bids from the Netherlands/Belgium and Spain/Portugal are in the race to host the 2018 event. However, they are all technically in the race for 2022.
If the US pulls out of the event it will rule Europe out of the race for the 2022 competition, as a continent cannot hold the competition in successive years.
Australia, South Korea, Qatar and Japan have all focused their bids on the 2022 World Cup.
UEFA president Michel Platini stressed his desire to host the World Cup in Europe and Dein believes England have a great chance of hosting the competition.
“We have been in six countries in the last 13 days and we desperately want to win the right to stage the World Cup," Dein said. "We are passionate about it and believe it will be a sporting success, a social success and a financial success and that is the
message we want to get to everybody and the executive committee members.”
He added, “Of course Michel Platini has a vote, I don't know how he is going to vote, all I know is that he wants the finals to be in Europe."
