http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 need to be more streetwise while playing spin: Craig Kieswetter – Cricket News Update
Looking to learn from their humiliating 90-run defeat at the hands of India in the group stages of the ongoing http://www.senore.com/Cricket/C-Kieswetter-c1206 pointed out that the team needed to be more “streetwise” and learn to adapt
in order to play spin better in the upcoming Super Eights stage of the tournament.
“You've got to be more streetwise, be prepared to score ugly runs,” said Kieswetter, elaborating on the lessons learnt from the match against India on how to tackle spin bowlers. “We've got to be adaptable to the wickets. We played across the line a bit
too much. We should have played a bit straighter.
“We realise that; we've highlighted it and we're obviously going to learn from that,” he added, maintaining an upbeat outlook. “It's probably a good learning curve to have. It didn't turn as much as we probably expected, and we played for a bit too much
turn. The ball's a bit more unpredictable here - it either spins or it doesn't - it's not as predictable as in England.”
England’s troubles with playing spin were laid bare during their final Group A match, played against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 23. Anticipating a significant amount of turn in the pitch, the batsmen were unable to adapt to
the wicket (which, in fact, did not turn as much as expected), and collapsed completely at the hands of the Indian spin duo of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Piyush-c82317 Chawla (4-1-13-2).
The 90-run defeat was the heaviest England have ever suffered in terms of runs, and they were bowled for their lowest total yet in the format – 80. Luckily, the team had already qualified for the Super Eights stage, and thus suffered no major losses in the
tournament.
However, the Super Eights stage holds a slew of daunting spin bowlers for the Poms – their first match will be played against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunil-Philip-Narine-c91869 is likely to prove a major threat.
The next game, scheduled for September 29 at the same venue, will be played against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, who will be eager to unleash wily
comeback spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BAW-Mendis-c1127 on the English batsmen.
