Ashes, 1st Test, 1st day: England sent packing by Peter Siddle's six-for
England were bowled out for 260 at the end of the first day of the first Ashes Test match played at Brisbane. Peter Siddle was the wrecker-in-chief as he scalped six wickets including a hat-trick and assisted
in stunning the tourists on the very first day.
The day had begun well for the English side who won the toss and resisted the temptation of fielding first. Unfortunately for the captain, he was dismissed off the third ball of the day when he tried to stamp
his authority on the game but only managed to cut the ball away to the gully fieldsman. Michael Hussey made no mistake and the captain was sent back for a duck.
Jonathon Trott joined out his vice-captain Alastair Cook and looked the confident of the two as he slammed five boundaries to get to 29. In between, he was also afforded a reprieve when the Aussies failed
to appeal for a caught-behind when it looked like it had taken a nick.
However, Trott did not add much and was bowled by the change-bowler Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 as England went to lunch at 86/2. Cook was dropped prior to lunch by debutant Xavier Doherty or else, things could have been
different for them.
After the lunch break, it was Siddle provided the first breakthrough as he got Kevin Pietersen to play away from his body and edge it to the slips. Pietersen made 43 and looked good till the time he was there.
Paul Collingwood also came and went to a similar dismissal – caught slips, bowled Siddle but Ian Bell thwarted any further loss and the sides went into the tea break evenly poised at 172/4.
It was in the post-tea session that things begun to grow drastically wrong for the English side. Siddle first sent back Cook after he had got to his half century, having him to edge to the slips in a very
similar fashion to the previous two. Off the very next ball, wicket-keeper played all over a yorker and was bowled to put Siddle on a hat-trick. Stuart Broad was to face the hat-trick ball and Siddle ran in fast to send down another one of those yorkers that
hit his shoes and the umpire ruled him out lbw.
With this, Bell kept plugging his end away for a few runs but the rest of the tail capitulated and England were bowled out for 260.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 ended the day with 25/0 and will look to bat out the next couple of days to put the pressure back onto the English team.
