England team director Andy Flower satisfied with three captains – Cricket news
England team director Andy Flower has expressed satisfaction over the appointment of three captains for the three formats of cricket in the world.
England Thursday announced Andrew Strauss as the Test skipper, Alastair Cook as the One Day International skipper and Stuart Broad as the Twenty20 captain for the sides.
Speaking in the same press conference, Flower who got his contract renewed with England and Wales Cricket Board recently said, “I don’t think any side has had three captains before. So it is covering new ground and for us that is exciting.
We do not know 100 per cent whether it will work or be the most effective system but we are going to give it a try.”
Cook was given the realms of the fifty-over game after former skipper Andrew Strauss retired from ODI cricket. While Broad was appointed skipper of the shortest version of the game after Paul Collingwood was over looked by the ECB
because of the decline in his performance in recent months.
This is for the first time in the history of English cricket that the country will have three captains.
However, some critics are not okay with the idea of Andy Flower having to deal with triplets to formulate policies regarding the team. National selector Geoff Miller, on previous occasions had expressed dismay over dealing with two
skippers, now he will have to deal with three to get things going.
This concept is new in the cricket world but if it is successful, it will most likely be followed by other countries as well. On the other hand, it is a big gamble which the English side are willing to take.
Expressing his confidence in the young skippers, Flower insisted that the presence of Strauss will have a good effect on Cook and Broad which will help them mature later on.
Speaking on the occasion he said, “Everyone here is fully behind Andrew Strauss. Both Andrew and I feel very comfortable with that and these two young captains will learn a lot from him and I think they are lucky to have him there
as a sounding board. I don’t see any problem in that regard.”
Only time will now tell whether appointing three captains was a smart move by the ECB or a total disaster.
