England tennis player Richard Bloomfield to miss Commonwealth Games
The English tennis contender Richard Bloomfield is the recent name to join the growing list of athletes withdrawing from the Commonwealth Games, as a result of his back injury.
Richard who is considered the fifth best tennis player in England, pulled out of the crisis hit event on Monday, after failing to recover from his long term back injury which further aggravated during a championship towards the start of this month.
Josh Goodall will replace the world number 302 Richard in the Delhi-bound England tennis team, which also include Anna Smith, Ross Hutchins, Sarah Borwell, James Ward, Ken Skupski and Katie O'Brien.
Bloomfield after announcing his withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games saying, "I am so disappointed to miss out on the Commonwealth Games. I was really looking forward to representing my country, particularly given this is the first time tennis has been
part of the Games.”
The doctor of the English tennis player has suggested that he rests for three weeks in order to recover in full form. He looked quite disappointed as a result of his injury.
"I have been advised by the doctor that my back injury will take another two or three weeks to heal, so the event has unfortunately come just that bit too soon," Richard added in a statement of the British Lawn Tennis Association.
His replacement, Josh on the other hand is extremely happy and excited to take part in the Commonwealth Games, which are going to be held in New Delhi. He was of the view that it is always a great honour to represent your side and he is looking forward to
it.
After his inclusion, Josh, said "I am so excited to have been selected. It's always the greatest honour to represent your country and I can't wait to get out there. The Commonwealth Games are such a huge deal within world sport and to have the opportunity
to compete at a major multi-sport event and be in the company of some of the biggest names in sport is a fantastic opportunity for me."
The skipper of the Commonwealth Games tennis side of England, Paul Hutchins, said that in spite of leading a depleted team, he is quite hopeful of a decent performance in the October 3-14 Games. The captain was of the view that he is fully aware of the fact
that Richard wanted to take part in the Commonwealth Games and was extremely excited, however he has no other option than pulling out of the event at the moment.
England, however still has a powerful side and hopefully they will have a successful championship, and a memorable experience even without Bloomfield in Delhi.
The professional tennis player from England, Richard Bloomfield as a result of his withdrawal has registered his name as the eight athlete from Great Britain to have pulled out of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Some of the other British athletes who withdrew from the Commonwealth Games this season include world triple jump winner Phillips Idowu, 1,500m last year winner Lisa Dobriskey as well as Christine Ohuruogu, who all opted out of the event one after the other
for a variety of reasons.
However, that was not enough as a total of four British cyclists namely Geraint Thomas from Wales, Peter Kennaugh of the Isle of Man as well as Ben Swift and Ian Stannard of England have also decided not to travel to Delhi, due to their doubts regarding
sanitation at the much-criticised safety issues as well as Games village in New Delhi.
