England thrashes New Zealand in the opening Test by 170 runs – Cricket News
Hosts, England, beat New Zealand by a huge margin of 170 runs in the first Test at Lord's, London.
This series is a good practice for England right before the Ashes against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and the hosts exhibited their determination to do well by pulverising the visitors with some outstanding bowling in the second
innings, restricting the Kiwis on just 68 runs. It was due to this unmatched bowling that England wrapped up the game on the fourth day.
After ending the third day of play with 180 runs for the loss of six wickets in their second innings, England resumed play on Sunday with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/IR-Bell-c1597 yet to open his account.
The pair was unlucky as it could only take the score to 183, before Finn became the first casualty of the day, losing his wicket without adding a run to his overnight score.
Bell was then joined by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TG-Southee-c2659 after scoring only six runs off 11 deliveries.
Broad, however, had a productive day, smacking 26 runs off 25 deliveries and remained unbeaten as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 was bowled out for 213 runs.
Southee was the obvious star from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 in the innings as he finished with six wickets to his name.
Requiring 239 runs to win, New Zealand could not have had it any easier. On the other hand, England was certainly caught under pressure and knew that this game would slip out of its hands if it fails to pose
any challenge to the New Zealand batting line-up.
The home team began the demolition work on the third delivery of the second over when Broad had New Zealand opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Fulton-c2177, caught behind with only a run to his name.
With their first wicket down and only a run on the board, New Zealanders were put on their back foot. Broad then struck again, ripping through the middle-order as he nabbed the wickets of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hamish-Duncan-Rutherford-c61359 (9)
and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LRPL-Taylor-c1849 (0) with New Zealand on 16.
New Zealand desperately needed someone in the middle to halt the English onslaught before ending up on the wrong side of the victory stand.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dean-Brownlie-c1349 tried to stand up to the English, but their lack of experience was no match to the phenomenal bowling attack from the English pacers.
This pair was also dismantled by Broad, who bagged the wicket of Williamson for six. At the time of this wicket New Zealand were on 21.
It was then time for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JM-Anderson-c1705 to join the party as he grabbed his first wicket of the innings by dismissing Brownlie for five. By this time, New Zealand had posted 25 runs on the scoreboard.
England didn’t feel the need to use a third bowler as Anderson and Broad did the job for their side by bowling out the opposition in 22.3 overs for 68 runs.
Broad was amazing in this innings as he finished with seven wickets to his name and was named as the Player of the Match.
