England tour of Sri Lanka: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964 happy to retain number one Test ranking – Cricket News Update
England holds on to their number one position in International Cricket Council’s Test ranking after an emphatic eight wicket win over Sri Lanka at Colombo.
Andrew Strauss, skipper England, was thrilled with the victory and hoped that it will open doors for more victories for the English team later this summer.
He said, “(We're) still number one - for a while yet, hopefully! It's nice we won this test match and it's nice we are heading into the English summer with a little bit of confidence and I am absolutely certain we are going to
play well in England.”
England was not only defending their number one status in Colombo but the Test series was also on the line, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 leading it by one game to nil. The English came out a completely different side in Colombo as they totally
dominated the hosts in every department.
Strauss held that retaining the number one status was not on the minds of English cricketers and they were focused on winning the match and levelling the series.
He said, “Having lost four test matches in a row you are not thinking of No. 1 in the world you are thinking about making sure we win the next one.”
Strauss thanked England’s head coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Alan-Gooch-c60530 for sticking with the side and guiding them through the highs and lows.
The English skipper, who has been short of runs, finally found some form in this game and his opening partnership of 122 runs in first innings played a vital role in the win. Strauss was happy to score a few runs however, what
really pleased the left-hander was that his side won the match.
He said, “It was good to get a few runs, I would like to have got more but winning the match was the most important thing.”
England will now play back to back series at home. The first in line amongst the upcoming series is against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 starting from May 2012. The will include three Tests, three ODI’s and solitary Twenty20 match.
