England’s Test wicket-keeper, Matt Prior, is considering a move that will come as a shock to the cricketing world. The wicket-keeper is determined to keep wickets for England, but with his pads off.
Prior wants to conserve every bit of energy on England’s tour of Sri Lanka, where the conditions are testing for players as there is a lot of humidity and the temperatures are also souring up.
In an experiment, Prior kept the wickets for England without wearing any protection to his knees and was content with the results. The wicket-keeper batsman did this experiment in a warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket Development
XI and hopes to do it against the Sri Lankan team.
“In these game you don't do anything you're not prepared to do in a Test. It's pretty warm here and every little helps. These are pretty extreme conditions, with the heat and humidity, so when you're trying to keep your energy
up and run around I found it made a difference,” said the 30-year-old wicket keeper.
The ploy of ditching his pads seemed to have paid for the Prior. When, the wicket-keeper batsman came out to bat he was full of energy. The right-handed batsman played a crucial knock of 84 runs from just 60 that helped England
win the second warm-up game by four wickets.
Prior, the South African born cricketer, held that the game is changing very fast and players need to keep pace with it. The wicket-keeper batsman is confident that there are no clauses in International Cricket Council’s which
may hinder his decision.
He said, “You have to adapt. You don't need a great deal of protection, I don't think. I'm looking to try and get something in place for a little bit of protection rather than just your shin bone. I don't think there's any law
on keepers wearing pads or whether they have to be inside or outside the trousers.”
England and Sri Lanka are gearing up for the Test series which will start from Monday, March 26 with a game at Galle International Stadium.
