England v South Africa - South Africa tour of England - 2nd Test - Day 1 - Live Score and Update
South Africa 262/5 (87.0 ov) v England - England won the toss and elected to field
With the number-one Test ranking on the cards, fans at Headingley, Leeds, witnessed a spectacular day of cricket between hosts England and South Africa on the opening day of the second Test, with the pendulum shifting from one side to another.
South Africa after having won the first Test at the Oval, are going for the kill to dethrone the English from the top status in the longest version of the game.
On the other hand, England are fighting for their title and are looking to humble the visitors in the second encounter.
At stumps, South Africa managed to post 262 runs for the loss of five wickets with AN Petersen spearheading the Proteas batting onslaught.
Earlier in the day, England chose to field on winning the toss, hoping to rattle the South African batsmen before the end of the day.
Openers Petersen and Graeme Smith forged a daunting stand by amassing a total of 120 runs, dominating the English bowlers right from the start.
England chose to go into the match relying on their pace battery, however, the South Africans seemed least concerned as the batsmen smacked the pacers all around the park.
Finally Tim Bresnan, opened the account for England by dismissing the South African skipper on a knock of 52 runs off 93 deliveries.
The Oval triple century holder, Hashim Amla, failed to dent the English bowling, as he got run out after scoring nine runs off 14 deliveries. The batsman departed at a time when his side had amassed 132 runs.
With England seeking resurgence, JH Kallis and Petersen stood in their way, as the Proteas batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking without allowing the English pacers a sigh of relief.
James Anderson then made inroads by nabbing the prized wicket of Kallis, who departed after forging an innings of 19 runs.
The South African opener was then joined by AB de Villiers and the wicketkeeper/batsman, who did not get a chance to bat in the first Test, proved his mettle by hammering an innings of 47 runs before losing his wicket to Stuart Broad. At the time of his demise, the Proteas had clobbered a total of 254 runs.
The visitors ended the day with Petersen still standing on a total of 124 runs.
