England v South Africa - South Africa tour of England - 2nd Test - Day 5 - Live Score and Update
South Africa 419 & 258/9d v England 425 & 130/4 (33.0 ov) - Match drawn
August 06: The second match in the ongoing three-match Test series between hosts England and visitors South Africa ended in a draw on Monday, with England failing to reach a tally of 253 runs to win the match, at Headingley, Leeds.
With South Africa one-up in the tournament, both sides will have everything to play for in the third and final Test, beginning from August 16, at Lord’s.
Fans, however, without a doubt had five days of superb cricket in the second encounter, where the pendulum tilted on both sides till the final day.
The gladiatorial performances from South African AN Petersen (182 runs) and England’s Kevin Pietersen (149), kept the match alive without letting either side achieve superiority.
Earlier, South Africa’s JA Rudolph and Graeme Smith resumed their side’s second innings from an overnight tally of 39, after bowling-out England on a first innings score of 258.
The two batsmen dominated the bowling side from get go, hammering a stand of 120 runs. Rudolph, who had come in as an opener in place of injured Petersen, became the first wicket to fall on the final day after smashing a knock of 69 runs.
Smith then followed, losing his wicket after clobbering an innings of 52 runs, leaving his side standing on a total of 129.
Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers then led a charge against the Poms, taking the score to 182 before Amla was picked up by Pietersen.
JH Kallis was the next man in, and he contributed 27 runs in the total tally. However, before the South Africans could hammer another big total, Broad leading the English bowling took five wickets, forcing the visitors to declare on a second innings score of 258.
Beginning their run chase, England lost their first wicket with a score of 21, on the demise of Kevin Pietersen, who was caught by Imran Tahir after scoring 12 runs.
Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss then took the score to 75, before Strauss was caught and bowled by Duminy after smashing 22 runs off 33 deliveries.
With Cook as their highest scoring batsman after jabbing 46 runs, England mustered 130 runs for the loss of four wickets at stumps.
