England v Sri Lanka – 1st ODI – Match Recap - England Humble Sri Lanka at the Oval
England under the leadership of their new one-day skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alastair-Nathan-Cook-c42852, left Sri Lanka in ruins by taking a one nil lead in the five-match One Day International series between the two countries. The hosts beat the tourists by 110 runs at the Kennington
Oval, London.
Apart from a phenomenal batting show, it was England’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Clayton-Anderson-c65552 who actually sealed the deal for his side as he left the Sri Lankan batsmen in utter dismay, making life extremely difficult for them while they tried to survive on the field.
Anderson not only took four wickets in his five overs but also squeezed the flow of runs as the Lankans could bolster only 18 runs off him. It was a perfect day for the 28-year-old pacer from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lancashire-c806, as he took three prized wickets that included opener
Dilshan Tillakaratne, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Denagamage-Proboth-Mahela-de-Silva-Jayawardene-c53546.
All three are an impeccable part of the Sri Lankan outfit. However, today was just not their day as they could not tackle the deliveries that came bolting into them.
Earlier, after winning the toss, Sri Lanka chose to field first, in a bid to have a clear target in sight.
In the third over, skipper Cook lost his wicket cheaply after scoring just 5 runs as he gave an edge to wicketkeeper Sangakkara off a deliver bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Separamadu-Lasith-Malinga-c89197.
However, before the Lankans could have another occasion to celebrate, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Jonathan-Leonard-Trott-c63890 took control of things as both batsmen clobbered the Lankan pace attack.
After taking the score to 53 runs, Trott, after contributing 23 runs in the tally, was trapped right in front of stumps off a delivery bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ranasinghe-Arachchige-Suranga-Lakmal-c83928.
When England were on 109 runs, Sri Lanka struck gold as Jeevan Mendis bowled a loose delivery, convincing http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kevin-Peter-Pietersen-c71169 to go for the shot which ended straight in the hands of skipper Dilshan, who was standing at midwicket. KP had scored 26 runs off 24
balls, which included three boundaries.
Then in the 21st over, it was time for the well set, Kieswetter, who after scoring 61 runs, clobbered a delivery at third man where Lakmal easily held on to the catch off a delivery bowled by Suraj Randiv.
Morgan went on to smack 45 runs before falling to his demise while the rest of the batsmen also chipped in as the English managed to post a total of 229 runs.
Coming out to bat, the Lankans had every chance to take the game away from the hosts as the total was not http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Richard-Griffith-c41953 enough, however, they had no idea that an Anderson storm was on its way.
On the third deliver of the innings Anderson struck gold when Dilshan gave a catch to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Timothy-Thomas-Bresnan-c94089 after scoring just a run.
In the next over, veteran http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sanath-Teran-Jayasuriya-c88467 also perished after scoring just 2 runs. With both openers back in the pavilion, it was up to Jayawardene and Sangakkara to pull off another victory for their team, however, both batsmen were sent back in the fifth
over bowled by Anderson.
With the two out, Sri Lanka never looked like coming back in the game as the run rate crept higher and higher. In the end, the Lankans could only muster 121 runs which saw them lose their first outing in the NatWest series.
Anderson was named as the Man of the Match for his phenomenal spell which left the Sri Lankans in tartars.
The two sides will now battle it out in the second one-day game scheduled to take place on July 1, 2011 at Leeds.
