England's one-day skipper, Alastair Cook, believes that the English side has been moving in the right direction, saying that the victory in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka will work as the first step to England’s greatest glory at the International
level.
The English side is meeting the Lankan http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 in the final One Day International of the five-match series at Old Trafford, today, July 9, 2011. Cook, who started off his captaincy stint on great note by leading the side to a comprehensive 110-run victory
in the first ODI on June 28, 2011, is optimistic that his side will continue the excellent work in the finale.
The Gloucester-born cricketer also uttered that the victory in the final encounter will be his team’s primary objective, but if the side fails to produce good result, it will give the players an opportunity to analyse their mistakes.
“I hope (today), in a one-off game, our skills can be like they were at Trent Bridge. The only thing that’s important is winning the game. If we don’t win, we look at areas where we want to improve and work at them,” shared the classy left-handed opener.
After suffering two consecutive defeats in the series, the Poms roared back and clinched an emphatic 10-wicket victory in the last game, played at Trent Bridge on July 6, 2011.
While the home side levelled the series 2-2, Cook emerged as the hero of the show, guiding his side to a comfortable triumph by hitting a fabulous knock of 95 runs.
He not only silenced his critics by proving his worth with the bat but also helped his team to dismiss the notion that the Poms are not good enough for limited-over cricket.
Terming the final ODI against the islanders as ‘cup final’, the English skipper described that side has been working extremely hard to be at the top in the international competitions.
“There’s no reason we can’t improve how we bat. We are not satisfied with where we are now. If we want to really improve as a one-day side and compete in World Cups and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Griffith-c919 tournaments, everyone needs to raise their game,” Cook said on the eve of the fifth
ODI.
