England v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alastair-Nathan-Cook-c42852 as right man to lead ODI side – Cricket News Update
After steering his side to an emphatic 1-0 victory in the Test series against Sri Lanka, the stylish English batsman, Alastair Cook's next http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Richard-Griffith-c41953 challenge will be to lead England to victory in the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series.
Cook was recently appointed as England’s ODI skipper, and the imminent series against the islanders will be his first outing as the skipper of the side.
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) came under heavy criticism for appointing Cook as the captain of England’s 50-over set-up since the 26-year-old batsman has never been able to cement his place in the English ODI squad.
Although, Cook is yet to prove his worth in the One Day format of the game, he was impressive in the Test series. In the just-concluded Test series, the Gloucester-born batsman collected 390 runs and emerged as the highest run-scorer in the series.
Cook’s ability to change his game in the limited-over cricket is still at question but the English selectors are convinced that the left-hander is fully capable of shifting the momentum into the ODI series.
After a Twenty20 International between Sri Lanka and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 at Bristol on Saturday, June 25, 2011, the five-match series will begin with the first ODI at Oval on June 28, 2011.
Appreciating his good work in the Tests, the national selector, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Geoffrey-Miller-c58870, expressed that the Poms have no better player than Cook to lead the side in the One-dayers.
“We think we have got the right man for it. When he wasn’t involved he went away, back to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Miller-c76318.
The former English all-rounder added, “It’s different playing in one-day cricket to trying to be aggressive in Test cricket, because of where the fields are. We’re quite http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arthur-Percival-Day-c45927 with him. He knows how he’s got to play and he’s a solid individual who is quite
capable of adapting.”
Cook has served England in 26 ODIs, scoring 858 runs at a strike rate of 71.38. However, the English selection committee expects a positive change in his game since he has to show more responsibility as the leader of the side.
