England v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 – 5th ODI – Second Innings:10 – 25 Overs Recap
Sri Lankan middle-order batsmen, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Saturday, July, 9, 2011.
At the end of 25th over, Lankan http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 were 113 for the loss of three wickets. Chandimal was leading the charge, unbeaten on 48. Sangakkara, on the other hand, was batting on 41.
Lankan skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gordon-James-Muchall-c60376 with the bat as all three batsmen were back in the pavilion with just 29 runs on the board.
Sri Lankan top order failed to cope with the threat posed by the new ball bowlers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Clayton-Anderson-c65552. Bresnan was the curator of the first two wickets while Anderson claimed the prized wicket of Jayawardene.
Poms had an upper hand during the first power play of the Sri Lankan outing; this encouraged their skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alastair-Nathan-Cook-c42852, to take the bowling power play at start of the 11th over. Bresnan had the ball in his hand while Sangakkara was on strike.
The Lankan batsmen started their counterattack and it paid off, as the 11th over fetched 11 runs. They continued similarly and by the end of 15 overs, the Lankans had reached 72.
Both Sangakkara and Chandimal were deuce on 25. Chandimal, had his eyes set on the boundary while his partner Sangakkara was eager in rotating the strike.
England’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GP-Swann-c1501, was expensive in his first over and conceded 9 runs in it. However, Swann, for the champion bowler he is, bounced back with back to back maidens.
The off-spinner drained the flow of runs as the required run-rate escalated to six runs per over at the end of the 21st over. However, both batsmen remained unfazed by rising run rate as they looked to fend of Swann.
Angelo Matthews and Jeevan Mendis were set to come in next. Sangakkara and Chandimal would have wanted to leave minimal work for the incoming batsmen as the Lankans still trail by 156 runs with 25 more overs to go.
Earlier in the day, Cook won the toss and elected to bat first. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Jonathan-Leonard-Trott-c63890 shined for Poms with 72 as they set Lankan lions a target of 268.
