http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 v Sri Lanka-First Test- Day 3 - 21-35 overs update
England resumed their first innings on their overnight score of 47 for the loss of one wicket with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alastair-Nathan-Cook-c42852 and James Anderson at the crease at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, England.
The first over of the day was bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RAS-Lakmal-c2287 to Cook. Lakmal bowled within wickets and did not allow the batsman to play his strokes freely. He bowled the first maiden over of the day.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Clayton-Anderson-c65552, the night-watchman, who defended the first four balls of the over, and had him out the fifth one. Anderson edged a full length ball by Mendis to the slip region and was
out without adding a single run to his overnight score.
The visitors got the result they wanted, a wicket early on. Mendis bowled a wicket maiden first over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Jonathan-Leonard-Trott-c63890 came into the middle but had to wait for the strike because Cook was on strike in the next over.
The first three balls of the 24th over went for naught. On the fourth ball of Lakmal’s over, Cook played through the mid-wicket region and took a couple. England got their first run of the day. The next two balls went for naught again though the
last ball was struck well by Cook and went straight to the fielder at mid-on.
Mendis started the 25th over with Trott on strike. Trott defended the first five balls of the over and took a single on the final ball of Mendis’ over and kept the strike.
In the 26th over Lakmal gave just one run. The 27th over was bowled by Mendis and he gave just one run to the opposition. Mendis and Lakmal contained the hosts well and did not offer them any width to play their shots freely.
They both kept bowling a tight line and length and did not give any loose balls to be hit for a boundary until the 31st over. On the fourth ball of the 32nd over Trott leaned into an amusing cover drive for a boundary off the bowling of Lakmal.
Similarly, on the last ball of the 34th over, Cook struck a marvellous cut shot for a boundary. The skipper decided that it is time for some change and brought his left-arm slow bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Herath-Mudiyanselage-Rangana-Keerthi-Bandara-Herath-c62873, into the attack, who gave just one run off
the last ball of his first over.
So the Poms were at 72 for the loss of two wickets at the end of 35th over of their innings.
