The second match of the One Day International (ODI) Series from Sri Lanka’s Tour of England 2011 was staged at Headingly, Leeds, on Friday, July 1, 2011.
The day began after the Sri Lankans lost the toss and were forced into batting.

The game began with a gradual start as the openers went with a probable easy-to-go strategy. The first few overs produced some slow runs which, by the end of the 4th over, came to a total of 14.
However, in a desperate attempt to make a run, Captain Dilshan was called run out after Broad secured the players wicket through an athletic display of fielding. The wicket came in Anderson’s over, the 5th of the innings.
After playing a sluggish innings, Dilshan left after scoring 9 runs.

In following over, another wicket taking opportunity came for the English after Swann dropped Jayawardene’s catch in the first slip. To Bresnan’s disappointment, the player’s over eventually turned in Sri Lanka’s favor after Jayawardene scored two successive
fours on the final deliveries of the over.
By the end of the sixth over, Sri Lanka managed to regain a strong run rate of 4.66 through a total score of 28 runs.
The pattern continued till the 8th over by the end of which Jayawardene and Chandimal brought their team’s run rate to a good 5.
However, in the 10th over, the partnership finally came to a close. Chandimal’s wicket fell in the same manner as of Dilshan. In a silly attempt, the player was called run out.
With Sangakkara coming in as Jayawardene’s new partner, Sri Lanka posted a total of 46 runs with a loss of 2 wickets. By now Jayawardene scored a successful total of 32.
With Broad added into the balling attack, the two batters proceeded with the innings adding slow runs to the team’s total.
After a competitive batting display by Jayawardene, the Lankan finally reached his half century in the 18th over of the session.
With Jayawardene and Sangakkara now settled on the crease, the duo kept adding decent figures to the total.
The first half of the Sri Lankan innings finally came to an adequate total of 117 runs with a loss of 2 wickets and a run rate of 4.68.
