However, the Guyanese batsman was not the only one to reach milestones – Broad’s five-wicket haul was his first at Lord’s, and the 8th for an English bowler at the venue since 2007.
Having lost four of their last five extended-overs matches, the Poms are hanging on to their top Test team status by a thread, and went into the game with the intent to secure a victory to retain their position. The Windies, meanwhile, went into the match
looking to put up a fair fight in unfamiliar conditions.
The hosts won the toss and chose to field on a pitch which groundsman Mick Hunt claimed had underlying moisture. Add to that the overcast sky, and conditions suggested that it would be safer to field first.

up to 86. However, the partnership came to an end when Broad sprang into action, claiming Barath as his first victim of the day as the 22-year-old was caught out by Anderson in the gully.
However, it was after lunch that Broad launched a full-fledged attack, which, despite its intensity, could not touch a defiant Chanderpaul who refused to give his wicket away. Coming in at number 5, the veteran batsman worked his way steadily up to 87, and
was joined by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760’ fifth-highest fifth-wicket stand at Lord’s. Their collective efforts got the tourists to 181 by the 68th over.

Play drew to a close with the Windies at 243 for 9 – Chanderpaul was still going strong at the crease, and due to be joined by Shannon Gabriel when the match resumes on the second day.
Broad was the star of England’s bowling attack, with figures of 24.4-6-72-6, while Anderson claimed a useful 2 for 59. Bresnan, despite a lack of wickets, displayed effective run restriction, giving away just 39 in 20 overs, with an economy rate of 1.95.
With the just one wicket remaining, the Windies would appear to be easy targets for the hosts, but the threat of Chanderpaul still hangs in the air for the Poms as they prepare to go into the second day of play on May 18.
