England v West Indies: Injury scare looms over Shivnarine Chanderpaul – Cricket News Update
The lynchpin of West Indian batting, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, remains a doubt for the third Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The 37-year-old batter from Guyana was taken to a hospital on Thursday, June 7, 2012, and underwent scans to determine the level of soreness in his side.
The third and final Test between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 and England was supposed to start on Thursday, but day one of the Test was washed away without even a single ball being bowled. As there was no toss, neither side had named the final
XIs.
Chanderpaul was in tremendous pain and his availability for the Birmingham Test would have been difficult had the game started on the time, but rain on opening day could help the batter recover in time to be part of the side.
A spokesman of West Indies cricket confirmed the news of Chanderpaul being taken to the hospital. However, the official remained positive and hoped that a day-off will help the veteran batter recover from the injury.
He said, “Shiv (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/S-Chanderpaul-c2390) went to hospital for a scan. A day off gives him a chance to see how well he goes.”
Chanderpaul is key for the Caribbean side in the 5-day format. The left-hander sitting out of the final Test will be a very big blow for the side which has already lost the opening two Tests and will be looking to avoid a three
nil whitewash.
West Indies skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/N-Deonarine-c2051 could come into the side if Chanderpaul fails to clear the fitness Test on Friday, June 8. Both, Fudadin and Deonarine, are yet to represent
the West Indies in Test cricket.
Chanderpaul, the 37-year-old, is currently the number one batsman in International Cricket Council’s Test ranking. The left-hander has piled a lot of runs during his Test career and has been able to reproduce the same form in England,
despite other batsmen struggling.
During West Indies' tour of England, Chanderpaul has belted 235 runs at an impressive average of 78.33.
