England vs Germany: who should i back?
Fabio Capello’s men have not quite had the easy-ride expected in qualifying through the group stages of the World Cup after finishing second in Group C, the team will be facing old rivals and Group D winners Germany today from Bloemfontein in less than an hour, which team will prevail into the quarter finals?
The bookmakers have matched both teams pretty even in the exchanges, although England is the favourite by a small fraction. My only concern about England is there lack of goals compared to Germany.
England’s first two matches were draws with USA and Algeria, although the game against the USA should clearly have provided three points if it wasn’t for goalkeeper Rob Green's sluggish error.
Italian tactician Capello made the necessary change following the mistake to bring David James in who seems to be doing well so far and remains unbeaten in two games.
Jermaine Defoe was also brought on instead of Emile Heskey In the third match against Slovenia, another change which went down well as the Tottenham Hotspur striker provided the only goal of the game which saw England through to the final 16 stage.
Germany on the other hand produced an excellent start to there world cup campaign as they demolished Australia 4-0.
Joachim Low’s men did face a 1-0 defeat to Serbia which should show signs of weakness, but to be fair the Germans were a player down.
Germany’s final game in the group was against Ghana, a highly entertaining game which went there way 1-0.
In the history books both teams have met 27 times, England having won 12, and Germany 10, and there have been five draws with Germany winning the two of those that went to penalty shootouts.
Will the game go to penalties?
If it does, have your fingers crossed if you’re an England supporter as the English fans have had there heart broken at both Italia 90 and Euro 96.
Many fans make the game out to be an explosive one, one which should be highly entertaining and produce many goals, I agree, the game will surely be a classic, and as much as the im rooting for an England win, it looks doubtful that the squad will change there style of play.
The winner of this final 16 stage fixture is likely to face a quarter-final against Argentina.
Current odds:
England: 6-4
Germany: 2-1
Draw: 2-1
Prediction: Germany to win
