England wins two more shooting golds
England won two of the six gold medals at stake on the final day of shooting competition in the 2010 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.
Richard Brickell ruled the men's skeet singles event while Parag Patel topped the full-bore open singles as England ended their campaign on a high note.
Brickell emerged victorious in a shoot-off against Cypriot Georgios Achilleos after making seven hits.
"I am over the moon. I was really nervous. You saw how good the field was," said the Englishman, who finished the competition with 144 points.
Achilleos, the defending champion, was disappointed with his performance.
"It feels bad. For a Cyprus shooter it's only the gold that counts. It was tough. I had the chance to finish it but its shooting," said Achilleos, who made six shots in the shoot-off.
Another Cypriot Andreas Chaskikos claimed the bronze medal after beating Scotland's Christie Davies and England's Clive Bramley in a three-way third-place shoot-off. Chaskikos nailed two shots while the other two missed their targets in the shoot-off.
Patel, meanwhile, set a new Games mark of 396 points to win the gold medal in his event.
"I'm very, very happy. It's been four years of worrying about it after I won silver in 2006. It feels fantastic," said Patel, who won his second medal of the Games after pairing up with Jon Underwood to take bronze in the full-bore pairs event earlier in
the day.
Australia's James Corbett settled for the silver medal with 395 while Northern Ireland's David Calvert secured the bronze with 393.
In the full-bore pairs final, New Zealand's Mike Collings and John Snowden combined for 588 points to claim the gold. They were just a point ahead of silver medallists Angus McLeod and Ian Shaw of Scotland.
Scotland eventually won a gold medal when Jonathan Hammond ruled the men's 50m rifle prone event. He posted a score of 696.9 to beat Australia's Warren Potent (695.4) and Northern Ireland's Mathew Hall (693.9).
Singapore's Gai Bin topped the men's 25m standard pistol event. He shot 570 to finish ahead of Trinidad and Tobago's Roger Peter Daniel (563) and India's Samaresh Jung (559).
In the women's 10m air pistol, Bibiana Ng of Malaysia upset local bet Heena Sidhu to win gold. The Malaysian banked on her last shot to win the event with 481.9, just 0.3 ahead of Sidhu. It was Malaysia’s second gold medal of the Games. Australian Dina Aspandiyarova
was a distant third with a 378.8 final tally.
