England’s Anthony Wall leads the way at Sicilian Open, European Tour
The second day of European Tour’s Sicilian Open Championship came to a conclusion at the beautiful par-71, Donnafugata Golf Resort in Italy, with Englishman Anthony Wall taking the lead.
The veteran carded a superb round of four-under par, 67 for the second day and was bogey free for the day. He looked in great shape with his iron shots and the hot putter favoured him throughout the day. The 35-year old from England
had an eagle followed by two birdies marked on his card.
Wall has been playing in the European Tour since a while now but has only recorded a single victory in his career. He won the Alfred Dunhill Championship eleven years back and is confident of lifting the Championship trophy after the
final round on Sunday. His best finish playing on the PGA Tour was at The Open Championship in 2006, where he was tied for the eleventh spot.
The European Tour player has a single bogey in his two rounds completed. He has a total aggregate score of nine-under par, 133 and leads the Championship by a margin of two strokes.
There is a two way tie for the second spot. Australian Richard Green and Raphael Jacquelin had the same scores after the second day. They had a two round aggregate score of seven-under par, 135 and trail by a just two strokes over the leader.
The experienced left-hander, Green, played exceedingly well during the second day and carded a round of four-under par, 67. He had six birdies followed up by a disastrous double bogey. The short par-4, 10th really troubled the Australian where
his tee shot landed in the thick rough. He had to be content with a double bogey and was rather disappointed.
Green is a seasoned campaigner and has three European Tour wins under his belt. He won a tournament last year by two shots over a few experienced players from Europe. The 40-year old is confident of improving further so he can curb the challenge of his opponents
to secure his fourth victory.
As for Jacquelin: he started his second round in a classic manner by making a birdie on his first hole. The Frenchman had a moderate day and carded a round of two-under par, 69. His score card showed four birdies and a single double bogey. It was the long
par-4, 6th which troubled him as he had to drop two shots.
Last year’s winning Ryder Cup captain of Europe, Colin Montgomerie had a steady round of two-under par, 69. He is placed tied at the ninth spot and has a deficit of five strokes over the leader. Montgomorie only had two birdies and was bogey free for the
day. The Scottish has a total aggregate score of four-under par, 138.
The overnight leaders Steven Dodd and Jose Manuel Lara failed to produce brilliance on the second day and slipped down on the leader board.
The third round of the tournament will commence today and some more under-par rounds are expected from the top contenders.
