England’s Jimmy White in a bid to win his first World Snooker Championship title
Former World Snooker Championship runner up, England’s Jimmy White will be heading to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield to participate in the upcoming 2012 World Snooker Championship with the goal of winning the event this time. The living legend has been
caught in bad luck throughout his career because despite reaching the finals of six World Championships, he was not able to win even a single of them.
The Whirlwind made it to the final encounter of 1984 World Snooker Championship against the veteran Steve Davis, who was on the peak of his dominance over the snooker world. The match up was tussling but the Englishman failed to improvise and lost the mega
event by a close score line of 16-18. After his first loss in the Championships, White was a bit disappointed but he did not give up his aims.
With a tremendous struggle in six seasons after his first Championship final, he breezed into the ultimate match of 1990 World Snooker Championship where he faced the record seven-time World Snooker Champion, Scotland’s Stephen Hendry. White as unable to
perform up to the mark against the fury of Hendry and tumbled down in the end by an easy score line of 12-18.
In 1991 brought another opportunity for the 49-year-old White as he clicked the 1991 World Snooker Championship finals spot once again. This time he was up against compatriot John Parrott who gave him no chance to hit many frame wins and eased into the final
match win by 11-18 score line. This was Parrott’s first World Championship victory after losing to Steve Davis in the final of 1989 World Championships.
White continued struggling in his career clinching some major and minor ranking events like the 1993 European Open and 1992 British Open during his campaigns of next season. He hit the final spot of World Snooker Championship again in 1992 and had Stephen
Hendry again on his table. White was under pressure because of Hendry’s previous victory over him, which troubled him during the game and he lost against Hendry by 14-18.
The final defeat, again, did not stray him from his ultimate goal. After that he did clinch a couple of major events of 1992 including the 1992 UK Championship and 1992 Grand Prix but the Tooting potter still had the hunger for the World Championship.
To kill his hunger of world title, the People’s Champion breezed into the final encounter of 1993 World Snooker Championship, overall for the fifth time in his career. The Scotsman, Stephen Hendry was waiting for him once again in the finals of the 1993
World Snooker Championship. This time, White failed quite badly against the Wonder Boy and lost the match by 5-18 score line.
Losing in his fifth appearance in the World Snooker Championship must have disheartened the Englishman. Due to his brutal defeat in the finals, White was not able to perform up to his standards in the next season and tumbled down in the rankings.
However, he decided to try his luck again and with some impressive snooker display at the end of the season, he made his way into the finals of 1994 World Snooker Championship. Scotland’s Hendry was his opponent once again in the finals but this time the
scenario was a bit different as the Scotsman faced a strong resistance from White. Hendry did win in the end but he had to play more than his normal game to oust the English potter by 17-18.
Despite slipping in all his attempts to clinch the world title, White still hungers for the Championship title and is eyeing to win his first World Snooker Championship title. He is currently placed in the sixth round of 2012 World Snooker Championship qualifiers.
