England’s Joe Perry ends Fergal O’Brien’s hopes of winning 2011-12 PTC Grand Finals
All Irish hopes to see the title in their local hero’s hands ended when the 2011 PTC Event 1 finalist, England’s Joe Perry defeated Ireland’s Fergal O’Brien by a whitewash score line of 4-0 in the opening round of 2011-12 Players Tour Championship (PTC)
Grand Finals at the Bailey Allen Hall arena in Galway.
The venue at Galway was house full as the Irish spectators were present there to see the Baby Faced O’Brien in action. However, they returned home with sad faces because O’Brien was not able to fulfil their expectations with his cue stick. The Dublin potter
had no chance to cast even a single frame win on his side of the score board and the Englishman swept the table brilliantly with some outstanding snooker genius.
Perry fired some decent small breaks in the first couple of scrappy frames to grab 2-0 lead and put O’Brien under immense pressure. The third frame was a piece of cake for the 37-year-old Perry as he moved within three frames lead at 3-0 easily. The Irishman
bounced back into the game in the fourth frame with 0-47 lead but missed to let Perry at the table who cleared the frame in no time to clinch the match.
While speaking to World Snooker after the match, Perry said, “I knew the crowd were supporting Fergal but I didn't need anything to spur me on because this is a big event with great prize money. Galway is a nice place and I want to be here as long as I can.”
He added, “I felt really good before the match and I expected to play better. It was a terrible match, there were a lot of errors in the first frame and that set the tone. But at least I'm through to the next round.”
Perry has now set up the Round 2 clash against the former World Snooker Champion, Scotland’s Graeme Dott. The second round match up will commence on Thursday, March 15 at the same venue. It will be exciting to see if Perry can carry his winning momentum
forward in to his next match-up.
