England’s Mark King crushes Mark Williams in an easy Round 1 match at 2012 World Open
Englishman, Mark King earned a huge victory over the former World Snooker Champion, Wales’ Mark Williams by 5-1 in the very first round of the 2012 World Open snooker tournament at the Haikou Stadium arena in Hainan Island.
Beating the current World Number two and one of the toughest contenders in the world snooker is indeed a massive achievement for the Englishman. The Welshman, Williams, before coming to the Chinese soil, was being considered as one of the hot favourites
to lift the 2012 Haikou World Open snooker title back home but all hopes ended for him when he tumbled down so easily in his first match.
This World Open snooker tournament has witness several snooker knights falling down against amateurs in their opening matches. Snooker dogs like Ding Junhui and Mark Williams could not save their strong positions in the matches and failed to improvise. The
performance Williams showed at the arena was the total opposite of what he is capable of.
King entered the arena with his new cue stick having a goal in mind. He was definitely under pressure because playing Williams was not an easy job. However, he did not let the pressure lose his focus from the game and played with his natural game. He took
the lead early and dominated the first session. The second session was even easier for the Englishman as he cruised into 5-1 win in no time potting a couple of cracking knocks of 94 and 71 in the last two frames.
Speaking to the World Snooker in his post match conversation, King said, “I was very pleased to win; Mark is a top four player and playing well again, even though he didn't play well today. I played pretty good, won two or three black ball games at vital
times, made a couple of decent breaks and overall it was a job well done.”
He added, “The cue I had before, I'd had for 26 years and although it was a nice cue, it had had its good life. John Parris made me a new cue, and I liked it but didn't really have time to play it in. Last June, I started playing with it and it seems to
be working.”
King has now set up his second round clash against compatriot Tom Ford who won a walkover because of Ronnie O’Sullivan’s absence in the tournament.
