England’s Mark Selby shines at 2012 Championship League Snooker Group 2: Day 1
The Championship League Snooker Group 2 matches are underway at the Crondon Park Golf Club in Stock. The first day of the tournament was lucky for Englishman, Mark Selby, as he clinched victories in all three matches. The World Number One was outstanding
against Matthew Stevens, Mark Davis and Shaun Murphy.
The Jester from Leicester faced tough resistance from Welshman, Matthew Stevens, who dragged the match into a decider frame. Selby played a stunning game at the baize and was able to claim the first two frame wins by 71-6 and 125-0. He pocketed two fine
breaks of 54 and 69 in the second frame and grabbed an early 2-0 lead.
Stevens replied in the same fashion clinching back-to-back sets by 0-101 and 56-63, firing two stunning knocks of 101 and 62 in both sets and pulled the game into a decider frame. The final frame was an all-Selby show, as Mark the Shark hit a cracking 77-point
break and won the last frame by 78-0.
The Leicester cueman met Mark Davis in his second match and defeated him 3-1. The 28-year-old was under a lot of pressure when Davis nudged him down in the very first frame by 11-110 after hitting a superb clearance of 86 to lead 0-1. Despite the first frame
loss, Selby bounced back into the game and won it by taking the next three frames by the score lines of 64-52, 62-54 and 77-35.
The former Welsh Open winner put up an exciting show in his third match against Shaun Murphy too. After the score levelled at 1-1, Selby came out of nowhere and took back-to-back victories by 75-55 and 70-5 after potting two knocks of 68 and 70, respectively.
The Englishman has been outstanding on the table from the start of the season and has hit the top spot in the World Snooker Rankings after a convincing performance. An impressive display of his snooker genius at the Crondon Golf Park has brought him on top
of the group with three points. Selby could not make it to the finals of the Championship League Snooker Group 1 but he will be looking forward to impress spectators this time.
