England’s Mark Selby targets 2012 Masters title for third time in his career – Snooker news
World Number One, Mark Selby, is one of the top contenders to clinch the upcoming 2012 Masters snooker tournament at the Alexandra Palace in London. The Jester from Leicester has already tasted the excitement of winning the Masters title and now, he hungers
for more this year. The world’s top potters will gather at the Alexandra Palace arena within a couple of days to battle for the title.
The Leicester potter was outstanding in the 2012 Championship League Snooker Group 2 matches and finished on top of the points table with six points winning all his group matches. He defeated Shaun Murphy, Mark Davis, Matthew Stevens, Mark Williams, Stuart
Bingham and Neil Robertson in the group matches.
The 28-year-old surged into the final of 2012 Championship League Snooker Group 2 against compatriot, Shaun Murphy. Selby tried hard but could not unsettle his opponent and lost 3-0. Despite his defeat at the hands of Murphy, Selby hopes for a good result
at the Masters.
While speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation about his ambition, Selby said, “Each player seems to excel at a different type of tournament and with me, it appears to have been at the Masters. The big crowds seem to bring out the best of me and
I play my best snooker.”
The former Welsh Open added, “I enjoyed playing at Wembley Arena (old home of Masters). I won the tournament there so I'm obviously going to say that but I'm always open for change and as long as I have a good tournament, I don't mind where it's played.”
The former Masters champion will be meeting Stephen Lee in his first round match-up of 2012 Masters. On previous occasions, Selby was victorious against Lee at the 2009 China Open and 2011 Players Tour Championship (PTC) Event 4.
The Masters snooker event is a non-ranking invitational tournament that will be staged at the Alexandra Palace after being held at the Wembley Arena for 33 years. The event will commence from January 15, 2012.
