England’s Matt Banahan is not worried about transition to centre
Utility back Matt Banahan feels that he can make the transition from wing to centre at international level.
The player has made five appearances for England on the wing, but head coach Martin Johnson has named the player at out-side centre for their Test with Samoa on Saturday 20 November.
The player is comfortable playing in either position and has started most of his games for Bath in the midfield position.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Banahan said, "I was given an opportunity last season at 13 for Bath and carried the momentum into this season. I prefer centre. I like to carry the ball a bit more and there is a lot more decision-making, but as long as I am
on the pitch representing my country, I don't mind where I play."
The centre will form a big physical partnership with Shontayne Hape in the midfield. Banahan started his career as lock due to his height and size. At 6ft 7in and weighing approximately 18stone, the centre will ask serious questions of the Samoan defence.
Banahan stated that his size and height was not an issue for him playing at centre. "The game is changing massively and it doesn't matter what shape your body is. You can play anywhere on the pitch as long as your skills are up to the standard they need
to be. I knew I had it in me [to play centre], I am enjoying it and I am looking forward to putting a performance down on Saturday."
The centre believes that the match will be a great opportunity to show Johnson what he can do.
Banahan also stated that international rugby provided a platform for him to develop as a player. "I am adding more strings to my bow, I'm enjoying it and this is a great chance. It's up to me to take it."
