England’s ODI records not up to mark
England might have been flying high for more than a year by winning the T20 world cup in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 and trouncing Pakistan in all formats of the game but their all time One-day International (ODI) records are awful.
However, their amazing run stretch back at NatWest series against the arch rivals Australia is quite remarkable. English lions conquered the Aussies at home winning the series 3-2. They also thrashed the minnows, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 at home. But, when it comes to
individual records in the limited over cricket, no player from England has been able to set a benchmark.
The total number of One-day Internationals crossed the 3000 mark in June this year, when England were on song against Australia. In spite of ODI series triumph against the Aussies and then http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755, the English players have miserably failed to battle with
rest of the cricketing world including minnows Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in all three departments of the game - batting, bowling and fielding.
The growing age of One-day Internationals has reached the mark of 39. Almost four decades have gone by but no English players have made it to the top notch of individual records. The statistical study of 39-year history of ODIs reveal that all the top positions
in ODI bowling, batting and fielding figures are held by Pakistani, Indian, Australian, West Indian, South African and Sri Lankan cricketers but surprisingly the English players are nowhere near the records.
England played the inaugural ODI in 1971 in Melbourne against arch-rivals http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 but now the latter is miles ahead in almost all competitions against England. Australia has featured in 747 ODI matches, while English team appeared in only 542 games in
the same period.
England’s lowly performance in fifty overs game can be judged from the fact that none of their batsmen have been able to cross a mediocre mark of five thousand runs, whereas, three batsmen from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 have crossed the five thousand mark; Andy Flower (6786
in 213 matches), http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Campbell-c49176 (5185 in 188) have achieved this accomplishment many years ago.
Among the top run-getters there is no English player among the top twenty. The record for most centuries and fifties is held by none other than the living legend Sachin Tendulkar. Furthermore, right batters have scored more than ten thousand runs in limited
overs cricket but English are languishing far behind in this category as well.
England all-rounder Paul Collingwood became his country's most successful run-getter in limited-overs cricket, surpassing Alec Stewart's aggregate of 4677 but still he is 22 runs away from his 5000-run mark. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marcus-Trescothick-c1898, with 12 ODI centuries, leads
the table for his country.
In the bowling department, former Zimbabwean skipper Heath Streak had better record than the experienced English bowlers, a point to ponder for English cricketing authorities.
In his ODI career, Streak captured 239 (at 29.82) wickets four more than http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Darren-Gough-c52450, the leading English ODI bowler with only 235 wickets.
The list of leading ODI bowlers is spearheaded by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chaminda-Vaas-c1223 has exactly 400. Six others have 300 or more ODI wickets in this long list.
It is to be noted here that so far only seven English bowlers - Darren Gough (235), James Anderson (179), Andrew Flintoff (168), Ian Botham (145), Stuart Broad (124), Paul DeFreitas (115) and Paul Collingwood (106) could get past 100 wickets in this particular
form.
In the fielding department, the chart of most catches is being led by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene with 168 dismissals. There is only one English fielder - Paul Collingwood (105) in the list of 24 who held 100 or more catches. Pakistan had three fielders
in this list.
