England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan overpowers Hong Kong’s Marco Fu in first round of 2012 Welsh Open
England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan showed his class in the first round of the 2012 Welsh Open snooker tournament as he cruised with a victory over Marco Fu of Hong Kong at the Newport Centre
arena in Newport. The Rocket put up a marvellous show to stun his opponent by an easy score line of 4-1.
In his Round 1 match against Fu, the former three-time World Snooker Champion was a bit nervous in the first session but he gathered his nerves later to prove to the world that he still
possesses the spark to throttle his opponent under any circumstances. During his run in his opening contest, O’Sullivan pocketed some cracking clearances of 52, 88, 68 and 102 to nudge Fu 4-1 down.
The Essex Exocet has been on top of his form in the current season especially after he welcomed the new year with the 2012 German Masters title after beating Scotland’s Stephen Maguire
9-7 in the final at the Tempodrom arena in Berlin. Winning his first major ranking event in the past 29 months did give the Magician a lot of confidence to shine in the 2012 Welsh Open.
“The event in Germany is history and this is what's important now,” O'Sullivan told World Snooker. "I was a bit nervous today because after winning the last tournament I didn't want to
go out in the first round. So it was good to get my hand on the table and pot some balls early on.”
The Essex potter added, “Marco missed the blue when it looked like going 2-2 so it could have been different. He's got a good record against me and feels comfortable against the top players
so it was a tough draw.”
The 36-year-old grabbed an early 2-0 lead firing two breaks of 52 and 88 before Fu cleared the table in the third frame with 62 to move up 2-1. The Hong Kong Fuey was leading the fourth
frame and was at the brink to pull level at 2-2 but missed a red on 37 which cost him the frame defeat as the Wordsley potter took the frame. The fifth frame was won by O’Sullivan as he clinched it easily potting a century knock of 102.
