England’s scrum half Ben Youngs injured; unable to play for next six to eight weeks – Rugby news
Martin Johnson’s England 2011 Rugby World Cup preparation suffered a major blow after their first choice scrum half, Ben Youngs, was ruled out from the game for the next six to eight weeks. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has confirmed the unavailability
of Youngs in a statement released on their website on Friday, July 1.
Providing details, RFU confirmed that a surgery was performed on Youngs’ left knee to remove cartilage. However, RFU has expressed their confidence that the impressive scrum half will recover in time to participate in the England’s pre-World Cup preparation
games.
RFU statement read, “A full recovery is expected as quickly and as safely as possible under the guidance of the operating surgeon.”
Cawston born Youngs made his international debut for England in 2007 against Scotland at Murrayfield. He has so far made 59 appearances for England in international tests. He has scored 38 points, which include seven international tries.
The 21-year-old Youngs started his professional rugby union career with Leicester in 2006. He made 83 appearances for Leicester Tigers and has represented the Tigers in both domestic and European competitions where he has scored 75 points, which include
11 tries
According to RFU, both the English team and Tigers medical team will monitor Youngs rehabilitation. The statement read, “Ben will continue his rehabilitation with the England medics in close consultation with their Leicester Tigers counterparts.”
Youngs became a regular member of the English senior squad in 2010 and has played an exceptional role in the England’s victories ever since. He played a pivotal role in England’s success during the 2011 RBS Six Nations tournament.
The injury rehabilitation has ruled out Youngs participation from England’s training and physical fitness camps. However, it is hoped that Youngs will be the part of the English outfit in their last two games before the 2011 Rugby World Cup in August.
The other scrum half players named in the England 45-man provisional squad for their 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign include Joe Simpson, Danny Care, and Richard Wigglesworth.
The Rugby World Cup starts on the 9th of September but England's first match is against Argentina a day later on Saturday the 10th of September.
