It was a stealthy strike from Joe Anyinsah that gave Charlton Athletic luxury of an easy victory in Round 2 of FA Cup as they defeated Luton Town by three goals to one.
The result has now granted them access to the Round 3 in which Charlton are to compete against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and expectedly the match is at South of London.
It was Anyinsah who placed the Addicks out in front during the 66th minute as they took over the game in the 2nd half. This had happened after Scott Wagstaff equalized the early opener of the game by Zdenek Kroca for the Hatters.
The game was decided with just about 10 minutes left in play as a free-kick by Johnnie Jackson got deflected by a wall of defenders. After the deflection, the ball flew in the opposite direction of Luton’s goalkeeper Mark Tyler; who actually could do nothing
but see the ball sail past him.
Luton as a matter of fact had a pretty good game even though they were defeated by a margin of two goals. They had an energized start to the game as Claude Gnapka made an intelligent play early on when he played Danny Crow. Nonetheless, the ball was not
netted as the strike struck the wood work.
Hosts didn’t lose confidence even after the cross bar incident. They proceeded into the game; head held high as Kroca attacked at the ball from short range but the Charlton shot-stopper Rob Elliott was awake to make a save.
Elliot made some brilliant saves in the night. He showed his talent by following a corner kick taken by Andy Drury after which Elliot made a save on the strike of Crow.
Just before half time, Charlton were rewarded with an equaliser as Simon Francis assisted from the right flank. There he found Wagstaff who acquired his 7th goal of the season.
Lady Luck seemed to be favouring Charlton as later a third goal was scored via free-kick by Jackson. Now Jackson will have to face his former club Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
In spite of the win Luton did play beautifully. Luton had 10 shots from which 4 were on target. For Charlton, there were 7 shots taken and 6 of them were in target.
Luton were given 7 corner kicks while Charlton had 4. There were 2 offside fouls committed by Luton while 1 was committed by Charlton.
Luton kept the ball with them by 51% while Charlton had 49%. There were 2 yellow cards given to 2 Luton players while Charlton were handed 3. With an impressive attack, both teams made 3 saves.
