ok when you are quoting something in an essay... how do you write it? eg.

As shakespeare once said, "All's well that ends well"

As Shakespeare said, "All's well that ends well"

As shakespeare has said, "All's well that ends well"

As shakespeare goes "All's well that ends well"

As shakespeare had once said "All's well that ends well"

As shakespeare is quoted to have said, "All's well that ends well"

I AM SO CONFUSEDDDDDD

  1. They're all wrong because they all lack end punctuation, and most of them don't capitalize Shakespeare.  If it's word choice you're asking about, the first one is correct.  Just correct the capitalization and punctuation errors:

As Shakespeare once said, "All's well that ends well."

  2. As shakespeare once said "All's well that ends well"

  3. I would lose the 4th and 6th line; the 4th is is awkward, and the 6th is redundant.  The others are all fine, but would have minor differences in usage depending on context.

  4. As Shakespeare once said, "All's well that ends well."

  5. The second one is best.  It's short and straight to the point.  The rest sound like you're trying way too hard to sound intelligent.  Which isn't me saying that you aren't intelligent, it's just that sometimes when smart people are writing, they get caught up in using as many big obscure words as possible.
