English Greyhound Derby 2012: How Blonde Snapper stood for championship?
The global greyhound racing fans, especially the Englishmen, were altogether taken aback on May 26 when the legendary trainer M. Wallis’ black dog, Blonde Snapper, made the biggest upset of his career by winning the
Great Britain’s most prestigious racing event entitled as English Greyhound Derby Final, sponsored by Williamhill.Com.
That was a matter of great pride, both for the dog and his trainer. Every runner, who participated in the tournament, dreamt of winning the
£125000 contest, but Blonde Snapper unexpectedly managed to make it possible. It was a grand achievement indeed.
C. Lister’s Taylors Sky, who was the defending champion, had slipped down on the odds card after losing the 2nd Semi-Final game from Blonde Snapper. So, M. Dartnall’s Farloe Ironman
was the 6-4 hot favourite candidate for the high-voltage final that made the scene at Wimbledon racecourse.
When the open race over 480 metres began at 22:35 (GMT), Blonde Snapper broke from Trap 6. From the very beginning, the favourite runner seemed to be in trouble, and he could not be able to
produce good pace.
On the other hand, Blonde Snapper started with sheer enthusiasm. Despite getting crowded, he managed to pick up momentum and got into command very soon.
Farloe Ironman too improved a little and started challenging Blonde Snapper. The two mighty runners had an amazing fight, but Wallis’ star did not let his rival surpass, and thus, finished first by the margin of 1
¾ lengths. He took 28.65 seconds to taste the biggest success of his life.
With Farloe Ironman finishing second, Coolavanny Bert sealed third spot by beating Taylors Sky by a short head’s margin. Westmead Adonis stood 5th while Judicial Ruling was the tail ender.
As a whole, the race was packed with thrill. The spectators enjoyed it a lot. And so, the grand event came to an end.
The English version of the Greyhound Derby commenced in 1927. In the beginning, the tournament was hosted by White City Stadium, but it shifted to Wimbledon in 1985.
The glorious event’s history is adorned with thrilling and amazing contests. The English sport lovers wait for this series throughout the year. Without Greyhound Derby, the sport is nothing.
