English Laura Davies in Jamie Farr Toledo Classic 2012 roster
English Laura Davies, who has been seeking to end her protracted victory drought since winning her last title at the Wegmans Rochester International in June 2001, is, once again, going to put her skills to
the test at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, set to start from August 9-12, at Highland Meadows Golf Club, Ohio.
Davies won the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic in the 1988 season, and now she is back in the tournament’s roster with much bigger plans.
The English star has not been able to prove her mettle in most of the matches she has played after her last victory in 2001, but she looks determined to atone for her past lapses this year.
It is hard to predict how the 48-year-old English is going to fare against competent LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) rivals such as current world number one Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer, Na Yeon Choi,
Stacy Lewis of the United States, but given her experience and profile, she has what it takes to beat the odds.
Davies has mostly played on the LET (Ladies European Tour), as she has racked up 44 professional titles so far. However, she has also made a name for herself on the LPGA Tour, having grabbed 20 wins.
Analysts said since Jamie Farr Toledo Classic is an LPGA event, most of the contenders participating in it are permanent members on the Tour — something Davies may find it a bit difficult to cope with.
Since the veteran golfer has paid more attention to LET events, she has not been able to attract a big fan following on the LPGA.
The English golfer has been training hard on the practice range, and her swing has improved greatly in the last few months.
“I’m very natural with my swing,” Davies said during one of her interviews. “That tends to mean I don’t pick up too many injuries. I don’t overdo it on the range, either. Modern-day players practise far too
much. They just wear their joints out”.
Davies participated in the last week’s Evian Masters 2012, where she could not do her best and finished outside the top 50.
Davies may be brimming with confidence these days, but winning a title in Ohio is going to take plenty of hard work and resilience.
