English League News – Wes Brown backs goal line technology
Manchester United’s right-back Wes Brown has claimed that he would be happy with the introduction of goal-line technology in football. Frank Lampard’s legitimate goal was disallowed by the referee in South Africa 2010 that denied England a chance to equalize at half-time against Germany. Consequently, FIFA came under scathing criticism from the English FA to introduce the much anticipated goal-line technology.
Brown, who plays as Manchester United’s defender, expressed that the concerned authorities need to act on the matter, as incidents like Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal could be repeated and is against FIFA’s fair play policy. FIFA President Sepp Blatter confirmed that in his meeting with the international board in July by saying that positive news regarding this matter could be expected soon. Lampard’s strike against Germany was clearly a few yards over the line as it bounced off the framework.
Wes Brown has played 23 international matches for England and stated that technology was the need of the hour for goal line decisions. The defender added that he was disappointed when the goal was disallowed against Germany as it was a clear goal. The centre back added that it would only take some seconds to refer to technology, and added that it worked great in other sports like tennis, so it would be a brilliant and effective addition to football as well. Wes Brown may not have had that many appearances for his country, but remains a key element at Manchester United.
The defender’s career has been plagued with injuries and has been the main reason of his omission from the national side. Wes however remains optimistic about his remaining career and stated that a player needs to remain positive during such issues. The left-back added that it’s very important to listen to what the medical team has to say, and act on their advice in order to stay fit for longer periods. The new coach for France, Laurent Blanc, had a spell at Manchester United, and Brown thanked him for his help which definitely impacted on his career. The England international stated that Blanc gave him a lot of advice over the years on small and as well as big issues. The defender added that Blanc talked about different aspects of defending with him and acted on his advice which really helped bolster his career.
In other news, English champions Chelsea’s manager Carlo Ancelotti claimed that he wanted to keep Joe Cole in the team but added that he had to let go of the player due to his high wage demands.
Joe Cole was a product of West Ham United’s academy, and made a name for himself. He joined Chelsea in 2003, and remained an important part of the squad when his side won 3 league titles and two FA Cup’s as well. The midfielder’s contract was not renewed in 2010 and is currently a free agent. The England international has been strongly linked with moves to Tottenham Hotspurs at well as Arsenal and Liverpool.
Carlo Ancelotti confessed that the 28-year-old’s contract was not renewed owing to “economic” reasons. The former AC Milan coach admitted that he had no issues with the player, and the problem lied between the player and the club. The Italian added that when the problem was related to money, it was not his domain. Ancelotti added that it’s always hard to keep a player like Cole in a squad for longer periods of time. Carlo praised Cole’s ability, and stated that he along with Ballack and Belletti did a fantastic job for the club. The coach thanked the players, but confessed that it was time to change a number of things. Ancelotti vowed to better what they did last season, especially in relation to the UEFA Champions league. The Italian was sad that his team crashed out of the champion’s league early in the tournament and need to improve in that department. The Italian believed that it was difficult to be the best in every competition.
