Question:

English Lesson?

I am going to teach a elementary class about nouns. I chose to read a book or a couple and have them write down the words they think are nouns. Then with there words separate them into three groups, People. Place. Things on the board. Does this teach them? What should I do once there in the right categories?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

  1. Can I just mention.....Then with their words.....

What should I do once they're in the right categories.....

Couldn't you make it into a game?  Create small teams (of equal ability) and then do as you mention....but let them  confer (quietly) and then ask who's got the most People, who's got the most Places etc. - double-check with other groups if they've got the same answers, too and make sure they are all correct before declaring the winners

If the lesson finishes too soon - tell them to choose a word from each group and make up sentences using them.

  2. It might  teach them, or at least reinforce the concept.  Your lesson needs independent practice so you might want to resort to a work sheet identifying nouns and then an evaluation of the concept such as labeling nouns as person ,place, or thing (whatever was your objective)

You could move on to other lessons"Nouns as subjects of sentences" and do some creative writing or "Pronouns replace nouns" with some game or "Proper vs. common nouns" or even "Singular vs plural nouns" followed by "Subject verb agreement"
