English Premier League Round-up Results: The Morning After
Harry Redknapp Hails Wilson Palacios
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp said that Wilson Palacios added a bit of spark to the side that drew 1-1 with Everton over the weekend. Redknapp insisted that the only reason he took the player off at half time was because he had been shown
the yellow card.
Redknapp said, “I thought the booking was harsh, but he then made another foul and I thought he if he made one more he might just get sent off. He tackles, works, gets close to players and to take that out of his game completely, which
I would have had to have done if I left him on, would be difficult.”
He added, “Wilson's done great for us since he arrived at the club. He brought something to the club that we never really had before, that determination to win the ball back when we lose it and he was a big signing for us. He's played
a big part for us in the last year or two.”
Matthew Upson Tells Hammers to Stay Calm
West Ham United captain Matthew Upson urged his side to remain calm despite their poor start to the season, which has seen them slump to the bottom of the Premier League table so early in the season. The latest disappointment came over
the weekend as the Hammers lost 2-1 to Newcastle at home.
West Ham took the lead early on, through a brilliant goal by Carlton Cole but things went downhill for the Hammers after that. Upson was forced to leave the pitch after only playing in the first half because of a hamstring strain. Despite
that, Upson remained positive.
He told reporters, “We’re not hitting the panic button. West Ham gets a lot of press attention and speculation for negative reasons. People get carried away with our -performances and our position. But before this game we went five unbeaten.
We just need to turn a few draws into wins.”
Roy Hodgson Pleased With Fernando Torres
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson expressed his delight with Spain international Fernando Torres after the striker scored the winning goal against Blackburn Rovers, giving the Reds a 2-1 win after what seems like an eternity.
He said in the press conference after the match, “The goal will do a lot for him - I thought he was good today. His movement was good and I thought he was much more aggressive and lively up front. He was much more like the player we know
he is.”
Hodgson was confident that Liverpool would have no trouble getting out of their recent rut if Torres continued to perform like he did against Blackburn. Hodgson did express his disappointment over the fact that his side did not score more
goals, but he was very happy with the much awaited win.
Robert Mancini Proud Of His Players
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini revealed that he was proud of his side for putting up a brilliant display even when they were down to 10 men. The Italian manager said he was not too disappointed with the 3-0 defeat and hoped his side
would learn from it.
He insisted that Dedryk Boyata had been unfairly dismissed in the fifth minute and that the game would have ended differently had City not been reduced to 10 men. Mancini maintained that Boyata had been shown red for a professional foul
on Maoune Chamakh and still considered his side to be one of the best teams in the Premier League.
He told reporters, “It was the key decision in the game, against Arsenal it was the worst time to go down to 10 men. But I am very proud of my players because I think they played very well. We stayed in the game until the second goal,
we always tried to play and to score.”
