English Premier League: Arsene Wenger defends Andrey Arshavin
Arsene Wenger has come forward to the defence of his Russian star Andrey Arshavin, after English media targeted the winger for the lack of his work ethics this season. Arshavin is one of the Arsenal players who failed to live up to the club’s expectations
this season. Even though the Gunners find themselves only five points behind the league leaders Manchester United, fans are not happy with the way Arshavin is performing.
The Russian winger, who also acts as an occasional playmaker, joined Arsenal in the winter transfer window of 2009 in a deal which amounted to be around 15 million pounds. Arshavin was also a target for Manchester United back then, but Arsene Wenger was
successful in securing the deal, brining the skilful winger to the Emirates stadium. Arsene is relying on Andrey with another start against Huddersfield Town at the weekend in Arsenal’s 4th round F.A Cup clash.
After his team’s progression to the final of the Carling Cup following their win against Ipswich Town, Wenger spoke about Arshavin’s form during the 2010-2011 season. He made it clear that he was not worried about the Russian’s lack of performance due to
the amount of games Arshavin had played, since his arrival at the London club. Wenger outlined that Arshavin had played numerous games, resulting in a fitness issue for the Russian.
Wenger further stated, “I am not concerned about Andrey's form because if you look at the number of games he played, Andrey is too harsh with himself. If you look at the best passers in the Premier League, he is still up there. Even the other night he has
given two assists against Ipswich.” The Frenchman will be hoping that Arshavin recovers his technical touch sooner rather than late, as the title race heats up in the English Premier League.
Arsenal will also be looking forward to their F.A Cup clash at the weekend; Wenger’s boys are scheduled to play their Carling Cup final in the last week of February. However, before that Arsenal are due to face Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League Round
of Sixteen as well. Last season, Arsenal were knocked out by the Spanish giants from the Champions League competition on the aggregate score line after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296 scored four goals against a depleted Arsenal defence at Nou Camp.
