English Premier League: Berbatov acts with humility after putting Liverpool to sword
Dimitar Berbatov became the first Manchester United player in over sixty four years to score a hatrick against Liverpool but the Bulgarian refused to concede that he was a special player in a post-match interview. Berbatov arrived
at Manchester United in the summer transfer window of 2008, just after the club had won the UEFA Champions League, in his first season at the club he had to compete with Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo for a first team place.
This competition proved to be too much for the former Tottenham man who was out of favor and form in his first two seasons at the club. Last season, Berbatov did show several signs of improvement but even then the Old Trafford
faithful doubted his ability and future at the club. Bought for 30 million pounds from Tottenham, United’s forward was on fire against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon as he netted all three of Manchester United’s goals to give his club side a memorable victory
over Liverpool.
Berbatov is now one of the top scorers in the English Premier League for the 2010-2011 season as the Bulgarian has scored seven goals so far this season. After impressing against Liverpool, Berbatov spoke to the media and said
that his performance against Liverpool made Sunday the 19th of September his best day in a Manchester United shirt. Things haven’t been easy for the former Bayer Leverkusen striker whose languid yet classy style hasn’t often been appreciated or
understood by Manchester United’s fans.
Berbatov added that he was very happy with his performance and told the reporters that he was going to go to his home after the game to spend time with his family. He went onto say that, he was nothing special and that he was probably
going to play some football with his kids when he got home. Seldom has Old Trafford seen such a remarkable feast of goals by the Bulgarian.
He got his first goal off a Ryan Giggs corner after fighting off Fernando Torres’s non-existent marking to head the ball into the back of the Liverpool net. His second however was a true work of a genius, he expertly brought Luis
Nani’s cross from the right hand side of Manchester United’s attack into his spell and then let rip with an amazing over-head kick. Dimitar’s third goal was again from a header as he out jumped Jamie Carragher to give his team three goals to two win four minutes
before the ninetieth minute mark.
Commenting on his second goal, Berbatov admitted that he didn’t see the ball hit the back of the net. He elaborated that, when he heard the crowd scream with joy it wasn’t hard for him to guess what had happened. The 29 year old
target man said that it was a good goal but when the ball hits the back of the net it doesn’t matter how they are scored. For the first time since his arrival at Old Trafford the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he was substituted in the dying minutes
of the match for Federico Macheda.
Manchester United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson also praised the Bulgarian as he said that it was remarkable striker by Berbatov which sealed the win for United. Ferguson added that, it was the first hatrick by a Manchester United
player against Liverpool in over sixty years; therefore Berbatov’s achievement should be celebrated. Fergie also said that, there were a lot of questions surrounding Berbatov last season as he was subjected to unfair criticism. United’s Scottish manager also
added that, Dimitar Berbatov has real ability and that he is a Manchester United-kind of player. Ferguson’s team take on Scunthorpe United in their next fixture on 22nd of September, 2010.
