English Premier League: Biggest Winners from Midweek Fixtures - Part 1
The events at the past weekend in the English Premier League suggested that Manchester United might just be able to walk to the title without even breaking sweat. The results in the midweek only emphasized this fact even more vehemently. Without even kicking
a ball on Wednesday, Manchester United were the biggest beneficiaries of the midweek football.
Here is a list of some of the biggest winners from the midweek fixtures in the EPL:
Manchester United
There is no one else in the league as good as being the master of mediocrity. One more mediocre performance, another three points in the league and another week at the top of the league.
For ages, playing mediocre and still conjuring results has been regarded as the hallmark of champions and based on this; it is difficult to argue why Manchester United will not win the title this year?
United have been far from impressive in their 20 outings this season barring the 7-1 win over Blackburn a few weeks ago but such has been their luck that they have been able to win their matches with remarkable ease. It may be the lack of competition from
other teams but United won't mind that as after the half way point in the season, they are sitting pretty at the top of the league and by the looks of things, no team looks likely to catch them.
Javier Hernandez
He just signed for Manchester United and has been banging in goals left right and centre. He is perhaps the most natural goal scorer in the league after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robbie-Fowler-c31214 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nani-c27299
Since the departure of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-Ronaldo-c9629 to Real Madrid, this Portuguese winger has taken over the reins and remarkably so. So far in the season, he has played 15 matches for the Red Devils and is averaging at least a goal or an assist from those 15.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-c9006 Smalling
He may have been at fault for Stoke’s equalizer in the game on Tuesday but barring that the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 U-21 international has seen his stocks rise remarkably ever since he joined Manchester United in March last year. He has already overtaken Johnny Evans as
United’s third choice centre back behind http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nemanja-Vidic-c27550. By the looks of things, he is on his way to become the lynchpin of United defence for years to come.
The Home Side at Old Trafford
For Manchester United, there is no other place like home. Their away form may be a little cause of concern having won just 2 and drawn 7 but such is the competition or lack of it thereof from the chasing pack that after 20 games in the season, United have
a two point cushion at the top of the table. But at home, Manchester United have been in sensational form, racking up 31 points from a possible 33, with West Brom being the only side to go away from Old Trafford with a point. United’s away ventures have yielded
a goal difference of +2 this season while at home, they have obliterated their oppositions by a cumulative score line of 29-7.
Wolves
Ironic as it is, the Premier League within itself boasts a giant killer. Never before in the league has there been such disparity in a team’s form against the top and bottom half teams of the table. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952 have the worst record against teams from the bottom
half of the Premier League. Of the 10 games played, they have only won two and drawn two but already they have beaten http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 this season.
Two weeks ago, they secured their first ever win over Liverpool in 37 years and on Wednesday, they went one better by beating Chelsea for the first time in 28 years.
