English Premier League: Chelsea aiming big this season
English Premier League champions Chelsea are by far the most in form and most feared team in the league at the moment. The blue brigade has been scoring for fun this season, and new boys Blackpool may have had nightmares before
making the trip to Stamford Bridge last weekend; not just because Chelsea have been handing out thrashings to new teams in the league but also because in their last trip to London they suffered a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal. After Chelsea had gotten
two early goals the writing looked to be on the wall for another cricket score. In the end though Chelsea took their foot off the pedal and Blackpool would have been happy to go home with just a 4-0 loss.
Many have tipped the Blues to retain the title this year, and considering the way Ancelotti has got them playing few would doubt that.
Chelsea have made a rollicking start to the season by winning all 5 of their matches in the season so far. Winning is one thing though, but the manner in which the champions have done the job is a big sign of things to come this
season.
Last season it was the 3rd Premier League title for Chelsea in the last 6 seasons, but still success in Europe is something that has eluded them. The former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, who brought them their first
two league titles back to back was also let go due to a lack of success in the Champions League. Former AC Milan manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has won multiple Champions’ League titles with Milan, has been tipped to be the man to take the Premier League champions
one step further. Their biggest achievement so far in Europe has been a loss to Manchester United in the final, where they were just one kick away from the title and Captain John Terry slipped and missed his spot kick in the penalty shootout.
This season Carlo Ancelotti's men started their European campaign on a strong note. Their first game was against MSK Zilina last week and they won 4-1 in a one sided affair. Next up is the Carling cup tie on Wednesday where they
will face Newcastle.
Chelsea’s mammoth Ivorian, Didier Drogba, is not satisfied with just the league. The African front man wants more from his team and has said that his team can create history this season and go on to win the Quadruple. That includes
the League, the UEFA Champions League, Carling cup and the FA cup
Didier Drogba, who has been in scintillating form this season following up from his golden boot winning performance last season, said that quadruple is not out of the question. But he knows that despite the form and depth of the
squad it is a big ask.
"It's very difficult, this is a very difficult thing to achieve," he told Sky Sports News.
"Why not? If we do it, it will be an amazing season. I think to keep the title will be difficult, even if people see us as one of the best teams with Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.”
"But it will be difficult this season. That's why we're here - we want to prove we are the champions and we want to keep the Premier League trophy."
Chelsea had long been one of the big 4 in the Premier League but were never able to break the monopoly of Manchester United and Arsenal at the top of the table. It was not until Roman Abrahimovic, the Russian billionaire, bought
the club and spent cash left right and centre to buy success that Chelsea made inroads at the top. Moreover replacing Claudio Ranieri with Jose Mourinho was another masterstroke. Now under Ancelotti, the team is successful yet is arguably playing much better
football. Under Mourinho they were often criticised for playing for 1-0 wins. Now with the Blues firing on all cylinders it may just be their year to do what Manchester United did in 1999; win the treble.
