English Premier League: Contenders for Player of the Season award (Part 2)
The English Premier League is only five weeks in, however most experts have already predicted a list of players, who are is strong contention to take home the player of the season award, once the season ends next summer.
Some might argue that it is far too early, to predict who is going to be performing better than the rest, in the coming months. None the less the experts have already correctly shortlisted the players who have won the prestigious honours in the past and
hope to do the same this time around. Here is a look at the players, who they believe will win the award.
Pepe Reina: Liverpool are currently having one of their worst starts to a season, in the team’s recent history. This bad start has only been followed by, one of the worst ends to a season in the team’s recent history. Liverpool ended their
last Premier League campaign at the seventh spot last season. This finish meant that the team was not going to be in qualification for the Champions League. This was a hard blow for the teams fans, but it was something that was bound to happen sooner or later.
Liverpool have been on a downward over the past couple of years and they were bound to git this negative form sooner or later.
Despite that fact, there has been one player on the team, who has stood head and shoulders above the rest. Contrary to popular belief, that one player is Pepe Reina. Reina has quite possibly been the sole saviour for the Liverpool team. This point was proven
when, despite Liverpool’s horrible season, the keeper took home the golden gloves when it came to an end.
This was an astonishing achievement, as the player shared the award with Petr Cech. It is also quite safe to say, that had Reina not been in goal for the team last season, Liverpool would have done much worse than what they did.
This season has been no different so far. Liverpool have only managed to lose two games against Manchester United and Manchester City. They have also only had one win, which came against West Brom. While the other matches ended in draws. Reina had been at
the centre of all the action during all these games, he obviously found himself helpless against City and United, when his team was falling apart all around him. However apart from that, Reina has been quite simply superb so far, his best displays came against
Birmingham this season, where Reina single handily kept, Liverpool in the game. The team’s defence and attack was failing miserably around the keeper as the Birmingham offence went on a rampage, attacking the Liverpool goal from all directions, the one player
who the Birmingham couldn’t get past was Reina. He made some saves that seemed to be physically impossible; he managed to stop numerous shots from point blank range and was voted to be the man of the match once the match came to an end.
If Reina can keep this form up for the rest of the season, not only will he keep his teams hopes high he would also quite possibly take home the golden gloves, along with the player of the season award.
