In the second part of this installation the focus was on West Bromwich Albion but this time around it is Wigan Athletic who are dissected, as Roberto Martinez’s team faces relegation trouble.
Wigan Athletic
The Latics are currently 18th in the English Premier League table and look like the favourites to be relegated from the league. Roberto Martinez has ingrained a positive mentality in his team but this approach has not paid off the expected dividends
thus far. Wigan has excited the crowds and has never parked the bus in front of the goal but this has cost them in terms of points thus far in the English Premier League. Looking at the Latics’ home form, one comes to realize that Wigan has not exactly been
firing on all cylinders at DW Stadium.
In the 14 games that Wigan have played at their home stadium, Martinez’s team have won three, lost five and drawn six in the Premier League. In doing so, the Latics have conceded 26 home goals in the 2010-2011 Premier League season. On their travels, Wigan
Athletic have been marginally better but still without hope. Out of their 13 away fixtures in the English Premier League, the Latics have won two, drawn six and lost five.
However, Wigan’s main problem has been a lack of goals in their offensive department. Only two other teams in the English Premier League have scored lesser goals than Wigan Athletic, including Birmingham City at 25 goals and Wolverhampton Wanderers at 26
goals. Wigan, themselves have only netted 27 goals thus far and if they are to retain their Premier League status, Roberto http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468’s boys will have to embrace a more prolific attitude in front of the goal.
Additionally, Wigan’s problems are further compounded by their lack of activity in the January transfer window. As West Ham United and Birmingham fished around for players in the winter transfer window, Wigan Athletic sat on their heels and failed to make
any considerable additions to their squad. Moreover, Wigan has only won a single match in their last eight Premier League fixtures. The Latics have drawn five of their last eight encounters, while winning only one and losing one.
Wigan’s upcoming matches can highlight how the Latics might fare over the next three months in the English Premier League relegation battle. Wigan’s run in consists of a total of 11 matchups, only five out of which are scheduled to take place at their home
turf in DW stadium. Wigan’s play Manchester United in their next league fixture but the good news is that their last three matches of the season are against Aston Villa, West Ham United and Stoke City.
In all honesty, Wigan’s chances of escaping relegation do look bleak. Their defence has been in shambles and so has their attack. Their only way out lies in the trickery of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hugo-Rodallega-c16414. It is imperative that Roberto Martinez uses
these players adequately as both of these forwards have been Wigan’s back bone in the 2010-2011 Premier League season.
Conclusion: Wigan to get relegated come May, 2011.
In the next feature, West Ham United’s survival chances will be evaluated as Avram Grant’s outfit has failed to live up to expectations thus far.
