English Premier League: Everton 2-2 vs. Liverpool
The return of ‘King Kenny’ (manager Kenny Dalglish) at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 has not started ideally for the Reds, and the former Liverpool legend is still awaiting his first win as manager in his 2nd
stint. After losing 2 games, his 3rd game in charge ended in a 2-2 draw against bitter rivals Everton.
It was the summer signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sylvain-Distin-c34430 headed form a corner to level the score
and Jermaine Beckford gave the away team a 2-1 lead minutes later. In the end, it was a penalty put away by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dirk-Kuyt-c11348 that salvaged a point for Liverpool. The draw means that they remain just 4 points away from the relegation zone with more than half of the
season gone.
Kenny Dalglish, the former Liverpool player, was shorthanded in his 3rd game in charge; his captain http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jamie-Carragher-c17728 was out injured. Therefore, the
new boss decided to give http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 up front.
Fernando Torres, who was playing in his 100th game for the Reds, almost got the first goal in the first minute of play. With just 9 seconds gone the Spaniard found himself one on one with the goalie but his shot lacked
sting and went straight into Howard’s hands.
Torres was certainly looking up for it, and it was him once again who let one fly from edge of the area but his shot was inches wide and went out off the bar.
Before the half-hour mark, Liverpool finally got the breakthrough they were aiming for. Kuyt got his head to a corner but Howard did well to save it. The rebound went back to Kuyt and his shot was once again saved by the keeper;
only the ball went to Raul Meireles who fired a smashing volley from the edge of the area and made it 1-0.
Liverpool ended the first half on a high, but the away team took less than a minute in the 2nd half to impose themselves. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mikel-Arteta-c25715 sent in a good corner and Sylvain Distin connected with a powerful header past the
keeper to make it 1-1.
Liverpool looked vulnerable and Everton had started to take hold of the game. The away side started to grow in confidence and Liverpool looked to have backed off. Just 6 minutes later, Everton turned that confidence into a 2nd goal.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Leon-Osman-c22041 did well to get to the by-line and got on the end of a pass from Victor and cleverly played a ball inside the box to Beckford, who did not make a mistake in slotting it home and made it 2-1.
Liverpool at that point looked stunned and out of ideas. Dalglish was desperately missing the fighting qualities of his captain Steven Gerrard. However, his team rallied on and continued to fight. Fernando Torres was played in
by Luca but the Everton defence did well to keep the Spaniard out.
There were around 20 minutes left in the game, and Everton were staring at their first win at Anfield in the league. But it was not to be as one of their star performers of the night, goalkeeper Howard, made a fatal mistake and
fouled Maxi at the goalmouth. Liverpool were given a lifeline and with Gerrard not there the responsibility of taking the penalty kick was handed to Dirk Kuyt. He made no mistake and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 2-2. That is the way it ended as
both teams shared the spoils.
