English Premier League: Fergie says Rooney will not be in hangover mode
Sir Alex Ferguson, the longest serving manager in the English Premier League right now has come out and said that his star striker will not suffer from World Cup hangover despite having a disheartening tournament in South Africa.
Wayne Rooney had an abysmal 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. A tournament which his national team England exited at the round of sixteen stage after losing their match against Germany, who are England’s long standing European football rivals.
Rooney was expected to shine at the World Cup for England as he came to the tournament at the back of a remarkable season with Manchester United, a season in which the England international scored thirty four times in forty four appearances in all competitions for United. At the end of the season, he was promptly named as the Professional Footballers’ Association’s player of the year for the season 2009-2010.
Like other fellow superstars such as Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Kaka, Rooney was unable to reproduce his club form for his national team. After the World Cup, English manager Fabio Capello has come under criticism but this condemnation has not been exclusively for him. There have been calls from various sections of the English media to drop the star striker from the English setup and replace him with younger players who are emerging through the ranks.
Manchester United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson, whose team are currently on their pre-season tour to U.S.A said that he does not expect Wayne Rooney to suffer from a world cup hangover of any kind. He did concede though that the striker might suffer from a bit of disappointment.
Alex Ferguson who is also known as Fergie, said that all the players at Manchester United, who represented their national teams in the World Cup and failed to do well with their national squads will feel that they have missed out on something. He added that the disappointment particularly generates from the fact that the FIFA World Cup only takes place every four years.
Fergie also remarked that several of United’s representatives at the World Cup have come back disenchanted. He said that the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and of course Wayne Rooney have returned very disappointed. According to Sir Alex Ferguson, one member of the squad who exceeded all expectations in South Africa has returned in a joyous mood, that player is Mexico’s Javier Hernandez, United’s newest signing.
Sir Alex commented that Javier can have a positive effect on other players in the squad because of his performances at the World Cup. He added that the Mexican striker did extremely well and surprised a lot of people. Fergie also stated that he would be some youngsters into his first team at the start of the season. He said that producing young players is an incentive for the club. He further said that Manchester United’s history is based on young people.
He concluded by saying that, players such as Gibson, Macheda, Evans and Wellbeck are developing brilliantly at the club.
