English Premier League: Ferguson fumes about the draw while McCarthy defends Wolves
Manchester United threw away a two goal lead at Goodison Park to effectively lose two points in their charge for the Premier League title. United were leading the Merseyside Blues by three goals to one, when the Red devils self destructed in quite an uncharacteristic fashion. It was the first time since 1992, ever since the English Premier League started that Manchester United gave up a two goal lead by conceding two goals in the stoppage. Arteta and Cahill got the goals for Everton as the match eventually ended at the score line of 3-3.
Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been in charge at United since the late 1980’s is famous for his hair dryer treatment. A treatment that his players surely would have faced after they switched off at the end of the match against Everton, Fergie as Sir Alex is more affectionately known dropped Wayne Rooney for the match and told the media through his pre-match comments that the English star striker was dropped due to the amount of abuse he often suffers at the hands of the fans from his former club Everton.
United have been famous for controlling games after taking the lead in the English Premier League, therefore Ferguson was quite rightly disappointed at the end of the match in his press conference after his team quite foolishly gave up their grip on the three points that were available to them.
Sir Alex told the media that he was surprised that United “threw” away the definite victory. In Manchester United’s second game of the season at Fulham, the Red Devils gave up a one goal lead to draw the match 2-2 against Fulham. Ferguson referred to that result and compared the Everton game to that match at the Craven Cottage. He went onto say that a team has to have determination in situations such as the one that United were under at the end of the match.
The Scottish manager also elaborated on his views by saying that Manchester United were wasteful in their chances during the match. Dimitar Berbatov and Nani both missed quite good chances to add two more to United’s two goal lead against Everton. Both of these players failed to convert the opportunities that fell their way which could have resulted in a larger number of goals scored thus increasing the chances of United for victory.
Ferguson termed his team’s capitulation as “unthinkable” as Vidic and Co. conceded two late goals in the last two minutes of the match. Conversely, Everton’s manager David Moyes complained about the fact that the referee blew his whistle too early as his team were on the charge at the end of the match. Moyes’s post match reaction said it all for the Toffees as their manager clearly thought that they were all set to steal a win from under Manchester United’s noses if it wasn’t for the referee’s whistle.
David also praised his players and said that they showed character as they came behind from a two goal deficit to score two against Manchester United after the regular 90 minutes of the match were done with. He admitted that at 3-1, he himself had thought that it was all over for his team who were unlucky with their chances in front of Edwin Van Der Sar’s goal.
At the other end of the English Premier League table, Mick McCarthy’s Wolverhampton Wanderers played out an eventful defeat against Fulham. Wolves were blamed after the match by various media outlets for being too aggressive in their tackles. During the match, Karl Henry, Wolves’ captain caught Bobby Zamora, the Fulham striker on the ankle and as a result Zamora apparently broke his ankle according to the tests that were carried out on the English striker’s foot.
Mick has come out and defending his Wolves side by emphasizing the fact that they play fair football and apart from some of their silly bookings, he said that his team’s reputation as overtly physical is just an unpleasant lie.
