English Premier League - Five way title race for Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United’s manager has hinted at a five way race for the English Premier League title in the 2010-2011 season as the old Scotsman spoke to a radio station in the United States of America. Fergie, as Sir Alex is more commonly
known, has been in-charge at Manchester United for the past 24 years. Under his management, United have won every trophy there is to win in European football but the veteran manager hasn't hung his boots up yet.
Ferguson is currently the longest serving football manager in club football. He discussed several issues with the U.S radio station. Fergie, who used to play for Glasgow Rangers in his days as a professional footballer, told the
radio station that the current league title race is now a five way race, signalling that there are five teams involved in the contention for becoming the champions of English football. Manchester United are the most successful team in English football as far
as Premier League is concerned as the Red Devils have won 18 league titles in all. Along with those 18 English league titles, Ferguson’s team has also won the European Cup thrice; a feat that is only bettered by Liverpool.
Ferguson said that he wouldn’t be betting against a five way title race. He stated that there will be a lot of twists and turns in the currently on-going title race. Ever since Ferguson has taken over the club, Manchester United
have consistently challenged for honors at the top level of English football. In admitting that the league race now consists of five club sides in the English Premier League, Fergie has actually declared his acceptance for the fact that Tottenham and Manchester
City are also title rivals alongside Chelsea and Arsenal.
A quick look at the league table only goes to cement the belief that both Spurs and City are viable contenders for Chelsea’s league championship throne. Manchester City are currently at the 4th place spot with the same
number of points as Manchester United and Arsenal whereas Tottenham Hotspurs are just two points behind United, Arsenal and City at the 5th place spot.
Manchester United won their last league game against Stoke owing to a late winner by Javier Hernandez. Ferguson spoke about the effect the win has had on the club as he said that the result against Stoke has had a positively galvanizing
effect on the squad as a whole which will allow his team to “motor on”.
Sir Alex also commented on the fact that his team have had a much harder start to the season because of the number of tough away fixtures that they had to play. The 68 year old said that, Manchester United have had a tough start
to their league campaign as they have already played Everton, Bolton, Sunderland, Stoke and Fulham. However, the experienced manager was quick to emphasize that their rivals, Chelsea have done little wrong themselves thus far in the 2010-2011 season.
Ferguson was also asked questions about his eventual successor to which he replied that Manchester United might never go for a young manager to replace him because the management job at United takes a lot of experience and knowledge
at the top end of the sport.
Speaking on his past week at Manchester United during which Wayne Rooney went from “leaving the club” to “signing a new contract”, Sir Alex stated that "At United, you can never be surprised. There is always something happening
in the club and always issues to deal with". Manchester United play their next league match against Tottenham Hotspurs, one of their potential title contenders for the 2010-2011 season. Wayne Rooney will not be fit for the encounter against Harry Redknapp’s
side as he is scheduled to be out of action for two more weeks given the condition of his ankle injury.
