English Premier League: Fletcher says United have the perfect environment
Darren Fletcher, United’s energetic midfielder has expressed his thoughts ahead of United’s pre-season tour of Canada, U.S.A and Mexico. Manchester United are currently believed to be the largest football club in the World Cup, with a worth of around 1.4 billion pounds.
Manchester United have been one of the most successful European club teams in the past decade. As they won three consecutive English premier league titles from 1999-2001, and then they repeated this feat again as they became English champions three times in a row from 2007-2009.
United also won the UEFA Champions League in the year 2008 after they defeated Chelsea F.C on penalties in the final of the tournament. In the summer of 2009, Manchester United parted ways with their most famous squad member in the shape of Cristiano Ronaldo, as the Portuguese winger fulfilled his lifelong dream of playing for Real Madrid in Spain. Manchester United sold their most prized asset, Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee of 80 million pounds.
United’s last season ended in disappointment for the fans and the players. On the last day of the season, United lost their premier league crown to Chelsea. They also failed to perform admirably in the UEFA Champions League, as they lost to Bayern Munich in the quarter finals of the tournament. Manchester United’s only trophy last season was the Carling Cup.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side landed in Chicago to begin their pre-season training. United are scheduled to play matches in Toronto, Kansas, Houston and then Guadalajara in Mexico. United’s Scottish midfielder was happy that his team was not surrounded by media frenzy on their arrival in the United States. He stated that pre season is always important because it is used to get players fit for next season’s matches. He also remarked that there will be some time to relax for the players in the squad, so it will not be all work for the team.
He also added that the players might be able to go out in the city and enjoy themselves, by visiting some places and taking in sights. United’s star performer last season, Darren Fletcher was a main driving force through their midfield in the previous season. His performances have made him an instant fan favorite at Old Trafford.
Fletcher went on to say that because of his Scottish nationality, it will be special to play against the Celtics during their visit to Canada. Celtic’s new manager, Neil Lennon will be leading the side, so Fletcher thinks that it will be interesting for him to come up against some of his national team-mates when Celtic play Manchester United.
United will also unveil their new shirt as a part of this tour along with their new sponsor Aon. Aon’s deal with United will result in the Manchester based club receiving 120 million dollars. The new shirt will be unveiled on the 14th of July in Chicago and will be retailed in the beginning at a price of 53 pounds per shirt.
Aon’s global marketing chief commented and said that no one can call the deal inexpensive but he remarked that Aon are aware of how they can make full use of the deal. He also added that the numbers can result in good value for his organization.
