English Premier League: Fletcher says it was a must for Nani to score the controversial goal
Harry Redknapp may not have been very impressed when Nani put the ball into the back of Tottenham’s net near the final whistle of the match at Old Trafford. But Darren Fletcher has revealed that Nani would’ve been bashed in the dressing
room if he had not scored for Manchester United from the controversial chance that fell his way during the course of the match against Spurs. Tottenham’s manager, Harry Redknapp had left no stone unturned in stating his views about his side’s two nil defeat
to the former English champions but the fact still remains that his side came up second best against a strong Manchester United side.
Darren Fletcher, one of the more senior members of the Manchester United squad revealed to the press after the game that Nani would’ve been in for some ear-bashing had he not scored United’s second goal. The Scots man said, "If he didn't
put it in the back of the net, he would have heard some words from the manager and the rest of the players, Tottenham will be very aggrieved by that, maybe rightly so. There was some misunderstanding from their goalkeeper but the ball was still in play."
Manchester United’s captain and the scorer of their first goal, Nemanja Vidic also spoke the press after the win, he stated, "We were in the dressing room and heard Chelsea had scored 10 minutes from the end at Blackburn. That put more
pressure on us but we did well. Hopefully now we will win more games in a row, which will be important if we are going to catch Chelsea."
Vidic’s header made it 1-0 to United in the first half; the defenders goal was the 1000th Premier League goal to be scored at United’s home ground, Old Trafford since 1992. Speaking about his goal, the Serbian expressed,
"It is nice to get a piece of history. But there will be more goals here and I hope this is not my last one either. I try to score and I should get more, so this one is good for my confidence."
The win against Tottenham was Manchester United’s fourth straight win in all competitions, a run of form that they will strive to continue with important matches coming up for the Red Devils. Sir Alex spoke to the press after his team’s
win as he said, "It's kicking-on time. No more dilly-dallying.
Chelsea are five points in front and we cannot afford to give any more points away the way we did at the start of the season. In November, United visit Manchester City and Aston Villa before they play Chelsea in December 2010.
However, the Red Devils have suffered a massive blow as Rooney has been declared unfit for a further five weeks. This means that there will be more responsibility on the young shoulders of Javier Hernandez.
The Mexican striker only had a single decent opportunity against Spurs whereas Park Ji Sung and Luis Nani also struck the post against the North London clued side. Ferguson is already without the likes of Ryan Giggs, Antonio Valencia,
and Michael Owen therefore he will be hoping that his current squad can do well until the rest of the players return from fitness troubles. In the middle of next week, United next travel to Turkey encountering Bursaspor in their UEFA Champions League’s group
stage match.
Sir Alex spoke about his team’s next match as he said, "I would rather we took a strong squad and try to get through. The way I have to look at it is if we win the match it will put us on 10 points and that would be us qualified."
