English Premier League Full Time Report: Manchester United draw away to Sunderland
Score Line 0-0
A stalemate was witnessed at the Stadium of Light, as Manchester United’s drew their fourth away game of the season.
Sunderland had a good first half, where they successfully choked the United midfield. The side also managed to come close to scoring on many occasions but were denied by the United defence. Sir Alex Ferguson probably welcomed the
clean sheet thanks to the efforts of club captain Nemanja Vidic and returning centre back Rio Ferdinand. Darren Bent was heavily marked by both the centre backs and he had no way through for the entirety of the game.
Things got better for the visitors with the injection of Dimitar Berbatov, who replaced Michael Owen at the stroke of half time. The Bulgarian helped the side manage their first decent attack and combined well with his team mates,
especially Nani. Manchester United showed their true class after the 60th minute, where they managed wave after wave of attack but it was to no avail. United made their second substitution in the form of Javier Hernandez, who replaced an off-colour
Federico Macheda up front. With the inclusion of Hernandez, things got better and both the forwards combined well with each other and were heavily supported by Nani. Nani got close to scoring on two occasions when he dipped a shot from distance, only to be
denied by the goalkeeper.
Sunderland also came painfully close to finding the net when a shot by Boudewijin Zenden struck the post thanks to a deflection by Rafael. Other than that, it was an open game and it was great to see so many youngsters doing so
well for Manchester United. Right back Rafael did extremely well to block out any danger and also supported Nani ably on the wings. Also, it was a welcome evening for Anderson, who played an important role in the midfield. The Brazilian sometimes skipped past
many defenders and proved too physical to handle. It was a shock to finally see 7.4 million pound winger Bebe on the pitch as he replaced Anderson on the 80th minute mark. The winger looked good with the ball and had ferocious speed which made him
lethal whenever he had the ball at his feet. Berbatov missed an open chance from outside the penalty area and many believed that the player should’ve at least hit the target. A total of three added minutes were to be played and Sunderland won two corners in
the process. However, Vidic orchestrated the defence well and Sunderland were held to another draw against the big boys.
This was the last premier league fixture for two weeks, as the league heads into an international break owing to the Euro 2012 qualifiers. Sir Alex Ferguson would have a mixed take on the match but would be happy to remain undefeated.
More frustration for Steve Bruce, however, who is still unable to pull one over his former boss and would be hoping to do so when these two sides meet at Old Trafford next time. Manchester United’s next fixture would now be at Old Trafford, where they face
West Bromwich Albion.
